How do you pick up meat??

I thought I figured this out before but that was 2 months ago. The controls made me put this one on hold til now.

I try to USE (ctrl-up arrow) dead Meatbug for cooking quest. It appears on the left side of the inventory screen. Nothing I do will make it get in my inventory. Same thing with a dead Jr Scavenger. A nice leg appears on the left but I can't add it under any column. I would appreciate help. Thanks.

And with that nice meat from scavengers and molerats, go find a pan in one of the camps and use it to make grilled meat from the raw stuff
And, if you press Ctrl-up fast enough, you can get a lot more grilled meat then you have raw
