Good Grief! The costumes look like they were made by a high school home ec department. I mean, is that supposed to be chain mail? Has anyone heard of any of the "stars"?

There is no such thing as "chain mail." There is mail, made a couple of different ways, like butted mail.
There is also no such thing as ring mail. For that matter there is no such thing as a long sword in the western world. Swords changed shape due to functionality, like when full, lamallated armor was worn it changed to a thicker base going down to a point to be able to puncture the armor instead of being pretty wide throughout for slicing or chopping. But no one called them long swords. They were knight swoprds or war swords, etc.
For that matter, there is no such thing as a metal shield, all shields were wooden. But since D&D makes up there own armor types, weapon types, shield types (that are all pretty anacronostic) they can probably claim as much lee-way as they need for what they look like, since they are made up anyway.

Yeah it's kind of important to remember that D&D (as well as most other fantasy) takes place in a completely alien fantasy world with no relation to our own. Expecting styles and weaponry to be similar to medieval Europe (or any other era) is just silly. |
