Not always. Sometimes a game is fun to play, just for playing it. My family is like that with AH's Civilization. About once a year we'll get a six or seven player game going ... knowing full well it will never be completed. It is just fun to hang out, yak, trade, and watch your civ expand and contract.
I must admit tho, 99+% of games are played to be completed or "won". You could have multiple ending criteria, President, have 10 Billion dollars, be first man on the moon, become Pope, or live to at least 65 as a strong arm on the streets of Shanghai. |

I would say that finishing a game and striving for the "winning criteria" are not the same. For your Civ sessions, the game would be pointless if you didn't move "from here to there" and the game didn't present you with a general idea of where "there" is. That doesn't imply that you have to actually "get there". Often, as you say, the joy is in the journey. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

To be honest- there is no "winning"- as in traditional RPG there was not. You are advancing in ranks of Your organization, becoming more powerful, more experienced, more famous- even legendary... But- as a game is designed as an MMORPG- there is no such thing like win. You can say: OK, I want to make my organistion biggest in solar system and- with help of other players- You can succed (personaly I do not belive but- in theory- there is such possibility). So- You are at the top, wealthy and famous, You rule biggest financial and military empire in the world. You have succeded... in one small part. Imagine jelous co- players- assasins, poison in the coffe, blackmailing, anarchists. So- kind of neverending story... |

I've never been a fan of levelling for levelling's sake, but there's a lot of EQ and DAoC players out there...
I still say you've defined your " winning criteria", even if there's no action what will "roll the end cutscene".
