Elder Scrolls 4: Shadowing/Lighting Issues @ Evil Avatar

The folks over at Evil Avatar have uncovered an interesting discussion at the [H]ard Forum site regarding the shadowing and lighting effects in Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. The discussion, according to Evil Avatar, stems from the recent interview at Beyond 3D, The discussion at [H]ard forums also has some interesting "before/after" screenshots. You can head to Evil Avatar to read their impressions of the discussion or head directly to [H]ard Forum.

Bravo Bethesda! Hey, I was there on df.preventum.net back when Daggerfall hit. Remember what you guys created with THAT bungled release?

The game now looks like a morrowind mod.

I spend roughly 3K a year on PC upgrades (Or 5K for a whole new rig) and because poor people came into my hobby now I have to pay for it?

God I hate the poor.

I say it has nothing to do with how good our systems are currently.

I believe they were trying to get such highlevel detail and mapping, with quality compared to Doom3 engine and it is just not possible with a vast open world, well at this point and time.

There have always been reports of slow downs running the game, especially on the 360, thou the Dev goes out of his way to claim it is not due to the 360, possibly suspious comment.

If I recall even Morrowind needed a Monster machine to run full effects at the time.

I guess we shall see, soon,

Knowing that it will be common to have even hundreds of objects in different sizes on screen, objects which you can move, throw etc., it’s hard to imagine they could do real-time shadows for all of them. Obviously they tried and it worked for some places, like for the opening scene in the dungeon where there were only a few objects in the scene. But just think of a shop or a library for example… hundreds of shadows, including self-shadowing???!! I don’t think so.
I admit I was a little disappointed because of the ‘lack of shadows’ news, but then I saw the German ‘PC Games Report’ video which… well… it just blowed my self-shadowed ass away! The graphics are untouched with real-time shadows only for characters. It’s just that simple.

looks washed out though. I mean, look how bright the "after" pictures are there. One simple torch isn't going to light up an underground prison like it was the 4th of july fireworks show. It makes everything look very "Fake-y"

I saw the leaked E3 gameplay video, and that had all the shadowing and lighting on...and it ran perfectly.

I have two nvidia 7800GTX's in SLI for cripe's sake...how about letting me use the things in an RPG rather then an FPS for a change?

Everyone is pointing out the dungeon opening scene… The video is just to bright! Turn down the brightness, beef up contrast and it’s almost as dark as the E3 video if you like it that way.
Maybe they changed the scene by adding some light because someone complained it’s too dark? For sure the bricks are not so glossy, which is a plus, because earlier it was like they wanted expose the effect to much, just too make sure everyone will notice. Now it’s more realistic in my opinion.
But if you miss the gloss just take a closer look at the floors in the scene with the minotaur (about 4:50 trough the ‘PC Games Reporter’ video). Actually everything is there: dynamic lights, the new character shadows, and some really noticeable shader effects. Just can’t wait…

Looks like we have to dumb down our PC experience for the lowest common denominator - a f*cking console system. XBox 360.....

So soft shadows can't be selectable video option? I bet politics will enforce that the PC version is NOT ALLOWED to look better than the XBox 360 version - just like when they dumbed down King Kong for the PC to make the XBox 360 look so much better. I've got my greatsword - who do I cleave first?
