You were in the power position! that's why Gomez and his greedy moonies got wiped out. They thought they were the stuff, they found out different. I think any ending where the barrier was still intact would have been terrible. If Gothic had an ending where you finish the game managing to achieve a whoppin' juicy position as head prison trustee, I'd be on here complaining about the ending in 15 identical threads! Why would you want an ending where you are a failure? |

Hmmm... actually, this is IMO a matter of taste, character and personal style. I had stayed with OC to the very end, had I been given the choice. Even if it made me a loser .
=EDIT= Anime lover, EX? Nice face!

An interesting choice Xen, on both your pic and title.

I think they were planning a sequel from tbe very beginning. Hard to have a sequel when the pivotal turning point/end of the first game never occurred. At the beginning of Gothic 2... if you were the old camp, what would happen? The Barrier is still up, you're Gomez now... what's left? You control the ore, the fate of all a Kingdom.
The barrier had to fall. And once it did, Gomez would be a nobody... just another land owner. The kings army would take Old Camp and the mines back, and Gomez would be executed. That's why he didn't mind being 'trapped'.
"It's better to rule in Hell than serve in Heaven" seemed to be his philosophy.
Yes, I am an anime lover. And I love my complicated bad guys.

Remember Legacy of Cain (the first one, not Soul Reaver)? You had a choice there as well: be good or evil. I, of course , was good. They nevertheless chose to start LoC part 2 with the assumption that you had become evil , thus an NPC, and introduced another hero for the game (Raziel).
They could have done something similar with Gothic, but they didn't, and it isn't up to me to complain about it since I liked it as it was .
=EDIT= I'm an anime lover, too. And everybody likes complicated bad guys (at least I do ).

I, of course, was evil and gratified to see that I rose so high in power.
Raziel was a great character. I love villains and anti-heroes. The entire time I didn't focus on his quest to set things right ... I focussed on his real reason. REVENGE! Caine will pay for what he's done to me... was Raziel's thought through the entire game.

Jaz... I hang my head in shame, of course it's an individual thing. I liked the ending as it stands. I guess I'm just getting testy because as soon as one of these "Gosh, the ending stunk" threads disappears, someone comes along and starts a new one. Then everyone jumps back in with exactly the same complaints they had in the last one. I'm sorry, I didn't mean to call anyone a loser, but I guess I did. I am sincerely humbled.
I gotta stop reading these threads.

I agree completely. I liked Raziel better then Kain. And I played the game with the revenge focus as well. Forget setting things right, I want to hold Kain's bleeding heart in my hand!

I really liked the music. And the intro... I loved the intro.
It was the first third person adventure I'd played. Not much of an RPG, of course, but it had its elements.

Raziel was great; I'm a bit sad that SR 2 doesn't run on my machine.
Gig: No harm done, everybody is entitled to their own opinion . I'm just a bit allergic to generalizations...
Peace

Regardless of whether they were planning a sequel or not they still could have had multiple endings. Plenty of games have done this before, including the Fallout series and Legacy of Kain. When the sequels were made, they just assumed you chose one route, even though it wasn't the only route you had in part 1. Fallout 2 for example assumes in FO1 you were a good guy, rescued Tandi ect. But in reality, In FO1 you may not have made those choices. They could have done the same thing with Gothic, give you multiple endings, and in part 2 just assume you went the New Camp route.
Also, becoming the Ore baron and the barrier remaining intact would not make your character a loser. Its just a different ending. His life is certainly going to better as Ore baron, than its going to be when he 1st gets out of the barrier. Remember the king has to give the ore baron whatever he wants in exchange for ore. Its a pretty good life. If a player didn't like that ending, they would still have a choice to play for the New Camp or the Swamp Camp, thats all. It all depends on your playing style and personal choices. I for one would have stayed with the Old Camp if the game gave me the option.
Having different endings for all the 3 camps would also have given the game a huge boost to its replay value, as most people would probably beat the game at least 3 times to get the 3 seperate endings.Actually 6 seperate endings would have been awesome.(a mage ending, and a fighter ending) for each camp.
