I have a question about the story of Gothic. Why were the guards being imprisoned too? Obviously the mages were imprisoned by accident, but the prison guards were meant to be inside the barrier. This seems like a hole in the story to me...
What guards would volunteer for that duty,or even continue to do it once the barrier was up? The guards would have control of the ore production, and I imagine would be pretty pissed about the barrier, and not being able to leave for the rest of their lives. I imagine the guards would have set themselves up as the Ore barons in Gomez fashion...something the king definately wouldn't want.(Negotiating for Ore that is)
Anyone want to try and explain that element of the story? |

It could be that the prisoners were supposed to be marked magically. Therefore only they would be kept inside permanantly. Anyone not marked could leave. But due to the Sleeper's influence the barrier was made much stronger and larger than originally intended.

The question can be answered by watching the intro sequence...there you can see that the guards were mudered by the imprisoners after the barrier accident...a revolution of the prisoners happened after the barrier expanded...nearly every guard was killed...due to the system of the prison there where much more prisoners than guards...hope this helps!

Yes, but lets say I'm a magician. And I'm going to create a magic barrier around a prison. Wouldn't I also be imprisoning the guards along with the convicts, unless the only the prisoners were restrained by the magic barrier? |

Yeah, got your point...
The original plan was, the magicians should raise the barrier and the guards should stay inside during this procedure to keep the imprisoners quiet...after the barrier would be established the maicians where supposed to release the guards through the barrier with their combined magical power from outside...but then something went wrong...
