Newbie Question - Lockpicking

I am new so be gentle. I have a lockpick and I attempt to open chests and various doors, but I cant get any indication on whether or not I'm even using the pick. Do you not use the ctrl forward command to use it?[/i]

When opening a locked item, you don't use ctrl+forward. Instead, you use either ctrl+left or ctrl+right. You will need the right combination of left and right to successfully open it. The game will have words that tell if you have to start over again, or you can just determine it by the sound.

Do you go right? Or do you go left? A simple decision, yes? No ambiguities. Only the dream of the path not taken! And so one might stand in this place and contemplate for a long while. What will I miss if I go left? What will I lose if I go right? And in my indecision, have I chosen a worse fate?
