Oppinions on Doom 3

Hey everyone,

Since Doom 3 has been out for a few days now, I was looking to hear some peoples oppinions. (I tried looking at planetdoom forums etc but the constant flame wars just depress me).

Heres my thoughts:

Ups:

Very detailed graphics and superb lighting
Extremely brown pants tastic
Lots more story than other ID games
Monster introduction set pieces are nicely done
in game computer interaction is a joy
Level design is very cool (if a little samey)

Downs:
No large outside areas (I understand this would have detracted from the brown pants factor). But I wonder if the engine is capable of it...
Very Linear (Yes, Almost all FPS are this way).
Story has slowed down considerably since the Big "Event"
Enemy AI sucks major arse

the sphere in the game is great.. sometimes too great. while playing today I almost got a hart-attack because one monster just appeared behind me with that weird noises. but I agree with you about all points. about the AI... I agree half. monsters do know how to avoid you, and manage to get behind you. but once you are shooting at them, they just stand there, keeping firing at you.

And what about your hardware-performance experiences? Should I go for it with my 800 Mhz Athlon with 256 MB SDRAM and GForce 4200 TI? Or should I rather work harder to get money for new PC?

I agree with everything you said too. The AI is fine for this game though. But that's not saying much since their whole purpose is to get up on you, or get within line of sight to fire at you. Most of the enemies do sidestep or jump aside when you shoot at them though. And the possessed marines try to take cover positions (usually). But the AI would be pretty lacking in most other games/situations. The AI isn't a problem here, but it might be in mods...assuming anybody makes some creative SP mods.

I enjoyed almost all of the game. I hated Hell, I guess you're supposed to though. It was the hardest (and most annoying) part of the game. I'm sure I'll god-mode through hell the next time I play it (or play on Novice).

@Danicek I'd really wait for the demo before buying it. I'm not sure how much the cpu actually matters, adding 512mb RAM might be all you need to do (if you have the 128mb card). It'd probably be playable for you at the lowest settings without upgrading (and it would still look great), but I'd wait for the demo before spending the $50 to find out.

I've got a p4 2.0, 1 gig of RAM, and the 128mb geforce 4ti and it ran smoothly with High Details at 800x600 (until Hell...then I turned the details down to Medium because I started to chug a bit).

It should functional on your system on lowest settings. I saw an online discussion where some peoples with GF4MX and 700MHz Pentium still run Doom 3 well in lowest rsolution, with most special effects turn on. Beside you can do some additional PC and Doom 3 tweaks (Tweaks guide from tweaktown site). I expect the game patch would contains further optimizations when it's out, plus upcoming ATi driver with better OPenGl performance tweaks.

The A.I in Doom 3 is very ordinary; most decent FPS titles have similar A.I.

I havent had any monsters realy "try" to avoid me. Occasionaly some of the troops stood in the distance popping out from behind a crate, but it seemed to be a scripted event rather than the AI.

Also. the only times I have ever had a monster appear behind me was when one spawned there. I havent had any with intelligence enough to do it themselves. (Also the fact that the levels are completely linear, there is almost always no way for a monster to work its way behind you without running past you first).

My system specs are as follows:

P4 2.4Ghz
512MB PC2700 Ram
ATI 9700 Pro (128MB)
Asus P4S8X MotherBoard with 8x AGP

When I first got the game it would run like crap unless I had the resolution down to 640x480. I could have the detail set to high though.

However, I downloaded the ATI Beta drivers and now it runs as smooth as silk at 1280x1024 @ High Detail.

I also tried the game on a machine at work with the following specs:

P4 2.6Ghz
1024MB Ram
nVidia GeForce4 MX 4000 (128MB)

The game ran "OK", and was reasonably playable at 640x480 with low detail. Considering the machine at work had higher specs than mine, except for the graphics card, tells me that the GPU is probably the most important component.

Great game, having a good time with it. Replaying Undying at the same time, so I really see the contrast between the two different games. Undying hasnt freaked me out in the least bit, even playing it at midnight. Doom is a whole diff story tho, there have been a couple instances where I've been shocked pretty good late night playing it. Alot of it is the lighting I think, and even tho I do like the default "flashlight or weapon" thing, I'll be using the "duct tape" mod next time thru so I can better appreciate it.

I dont know how Hell is or anything yet, but what I've seen of the facility and mars is great. I'm not the type to rush thru FPS games, sometimes I just save the game at a real heavy point and play that part thru several times. Kills my time

runs good for me, using a pentium 1.8ghz, 1gb RAM ATi 9800

It hearkens back to the old school in some ways, it seems like one of the older run'n gun sort of game at times. That's a good thing tho, I'm not entirely crazy about the newer "arena shooters". If you like a good corridor crawl, buy it. Buy it anyways, it's a good game and heir to a very distinguished electronic lineage.

DOOM3 is SWEEEEEEEEEET.

It's EXACTLY what ID said it would be.

It is old-school. It's Diablo in Space. It's Event Horizon on Acid. It looks good in all resolutions all the way down to 640x480. It runs smooth as HELL! And it has physics, like lots of games today, so you can push stuff around. There are hidden items everywhere, just like all ID games.

The flashlight rocks. It artificially creates tension and I am glad they made the game that way. Besides...you feel like a pimp when you bitch-slap a demon with it.

The atmosphere like Thief3 is second to none. I love the PDA(video, audio, emails) that just add to the atmosphere.

The demons & zombies are really badass when you see them in action. This game is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the screenshots. All your demonic buddies from DOOM make appearances.

This game is a 9.5

I wouldnt give it a 9.5, but I do agree with your points.

Especialy it looking good at 640x480. I was highly impressed how it looked at that resolution on my LCD.

Although I doubt it would look as good on a CRT since I get free Anti-Aliasing on the LCD because of its native resolution being 1280x1024.

I think the main benefit Doom 3 has over most other FPS is that it concentrates on small scale areas with very high details. Even at lower resolutions you dont lose much.

Its almost like TV in a way, TV is at such an incredibly low resolution (Obviously not HDTV), but you dont notice it because there is just so much detail packed into the image.
