@Jabberwocky,
Sorry for the confusion, indeed - wav's for Gothic and .sty's for G2. be re-assured i am helping you on this.
If for instance you extract the Xardas tower.sty then however it is tweeked or manipulated using a sound editing tool of which there are many (i like to use soundforge with the plug-ins) then as long as it is put back in/rebuilt it will play as long as it is definately still in original .sty format. I am currently (just for you) looking at suitable programs, "cat 2000" is looking good at the moment.
Having said that, on the previously mentioned site world of gothic, there are some readily downloadable G2 files of various types, the themes for example are in mp3 format, so i think (not sure just yet) that cat 2000 will do all that you need, will come back with more info. |

Thanks Wulf. I think I have an old version of Soundforge on my PC. I'll see what I can do with it. I've been playing around with Goman a little bit - trying to give our hero a new face! _________________ "D'oh! I knew I should've saved sooner!" |

Not sure if this will help at all...- the SGT (segment), STY (style) and DLS (instrument collection) files are data elements for DirectMusic compositions. You can arrange them with Microsoft DirectMusic Producer (available also as part of the DirectX SDK).
- the Daedalus files _work\data\Scripts\System\Music\MusicInst.d and _work\data\Scripts\System\_intern\Music.d have some interesting information about the music in G2

This is all interesting material,
It would seem that the (.sty) is the "applied" style of the original intrument,
so a Korg midi device would utilise the Korg style and a Roland device the Roland style and so on. So you could then ask "what is the style of the G2 music"? - - i would say "don't know" it doesn't really matter as long as you are able to seperate and configure the various multi-midi channels of the original sounds and convert them.
Supposing i had a Roland sx3000 for example, i could download composed music from one of the relevent fan sites "of that style" and i could play it direct. I have just tried "band in a box" (tialware - beware of e-mails) and it is capable of manipulating the files with ease once the relevent midi device of your sound/device have been configured and enabled. Still looking for further free to use programs. |

Hmmnn.... Well noble citizens, the more I hear the more I may be losing heart. It sounds like a much more involved project than I originally had in mind. I also made my way into Jarkendar while this thread was being filled and I must say that the music in the new world is quite good. I (personal opinion of course) think that it is a marked improvement from the rest of the soundtrack and would be reluctant to do away with the Pirate theme song and it's understated accordion nuance.
I suppose I'm just trying to gracefully get out of this fire that I started without getting burned by all of you helpful do-gooders out there. As I mentioned at the start, I don't think that the music for Gothic is bad, I was just curious as to what could be done. If anyone wants to continue this quest, I will be happy to cheer you on. But this 'Curious George' has run out of steam.....
Many thanks to each of you for your support! Please no hard feelings. _________________ "D'oh! I knew I should've saved sooner!" |
