Well... here are the following games I *own* and have been playing with *no* [yes, not even one!!!] problem:
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein
- Medal of Honor
- MS Flight Simulator Pro 2002'
- Alen versus Predator 2
- Start Trek Bridge Commander
- Max Payne
+ so many more but THOSE are the ones which require a very good computer + video card

... then I bought 'Gothic' which loaded within 30 minutes then started 'new game' then got the video intro and then... nothing, although I waited another couple of hours to see whether or not it would load

Also each time I would insert that CD ROM it wanted to install Gothic

System:
PIV 1.7
GeForce 4 MX 64 mb
512 RAM
etc..

... yes of course I brought back the game the very next day and got my refund:)

... of course it is my system: see, ID software, EA etc... don't know how to make games ) My $3500 VAIO Sony isn't good either )

Please don't quit your day job: making good Mercedes cars...

...and you call that a game!

Oliver

I guess our friend meant Alien vs P2 ...

About the game, it was too short, too linear and somewhat uninspiring. Admitted, playing an Alien was quite entertaining (and this from me who does love Predators), but the rest...
The best thing in the whole game IMO was Duke , even though I think they should have made him an android. Hell, he behaved like one.

I think it was scary to play as humans.

Uh-huh.

I think the main problem with Gothic not starting isn't down to graphical error but 'stupidity'. The New Error. Human Error. Stupid people are always so ready to blame the hardware but I have a really weird system. I have a TNT2 M64Pro in here complete with 765MB of DDR. Now that's weird and sure, I've had a couple of badly programmed freeware games barf at it but when it comes to commercial games - I've had no problems, why?

I bother to read.

i know that might be hard for you Oliver but I certainly have no trouble. I happened to read on the site that the Gothic engine has difficulties with drivers older than the latest nVidia build (23.11) because it used stuff that those drivers weren't capable of. Of course, I didn't even really need to know this because I'm not a lazy arsed type. I update my drivers whenever there's a new driverset out.

So don't put down a game because of your own stupid and slovenly nature, the only person it makes look bad in the end is You.

Edit Since you took a stab at Gothic I think I'll take a stab at your games too. It seems you like nothing but utterly mindless games -- the only one there that requires a modicum of thought is Bridge Commander but the facial expressions and lip-synching on that were so bad that I could only stand an hour of it before I uninstalled it. Good riddance. Yet another wasted license. Trek is great, that game wasn't. I hate it when gamers flame a game's forum just because they don't have the ingelligence to appreciate said game. It bugs me, that. So I thought I'd fight fire with fire this time.

Yes, it was a tad. Sorry about that.

People who take their inadequacies out on innocent board-goers and just rambling on with ill-informed facts just irritate me. Besides, I don't like to see a good game getting bad publicity when it doesn't deserve it. When it comes to stuff like the winches, fine ... but most games won't run right unless you update your drivers and patch.

Yes, that is normal if you do a full install I think.

Sony Vaio

The Sony Vaio's are ridiculously over priced for their spec. They just try to ride on the Sony brand name. They are for stupid yuppies who just want to look cool while carrying around a useless paper weight.

I had a DELL Inspiron that was half the price of my colleagues Sony Vaio and it left it in the dirt when it came to performance.
