Sci-Fi Vibe of the game.

Is it just me or does this game feel more like a sci-fi game than a fantasy game? I think it is the organic nature of the monsters, they look like mutants to me. The whole house/guild/faction thing has a Dune vibe to it for me. The fantasy elements, armor, swords, and spells all have a sci-fi undercurrent to them. I went to the city above balamra <sp?> and the gaurds from house readon <sp?> looked VERY sci-fi to me.

That is not to say it is a bad thing, new and different is usuallly a good thing. I am mostly just curious if you guys feel the same thing or if it is just me.

You are messed up in the head I think... Morrowind has no Sci-Fi vibe at all. It's a fully thought out Fantasy World with it's own history and culture. Playing it is like reading a good Fantasy book. The character models look a bit different than your traditional fantasy rpg game but that just adds to the uniqueness and the otherworldly feel of everything. I personally don't like my sci-fi and fantasy to be mixed. The Wizardy series and the M&M series both had scfi-fi elements in them, blasters, computers and stuff which I feel actually take away from the setting because they didn't jive with the environment. The Elder Scrolls Series(Arena, Daggerfall, and Morrowind) have none of the scf-fi stuff in them as far as I know and I am very glad that they don't. Morrowind is a great game partly because the whole gameworld culture is a consistant fantasy world.

He's not messed up in the head, there is defiently a sci fi vibe to it, you can't deny that, espically in towns with those big "shell" like buildings and some of the people have like sci fi looking armor if you ask me.

Yes, you are messed up in the head

The big shell buildings have nothing to do with "sci-fi" and neither does the look of the armor. The island is crafted around the natural protection and benefits of chitin material which has an "otherworldly" feel to it, true, but definitely not sci-fi. Like the guy said earlier, Might and Magic and Wizardry are your fantasy/sci-fi mutts.

One could interpret the sci-fi feel from the walking jellyfish with the controls in their heads to make them move where you want them to.

I get a little of a sci-fi vibe from some parts of the game, like the first blade quest (don't want to spoil it but there are some guardians that have a arcanum like tech meets magic vibe - not that arcanum invented that). The design to me is not so much sci-fi though in general, but more a kindof "microcosm" feel, like insects, fungus, mold, and an underwater feeling too, with the big shrimp flying through the air like they are underwater, and the shapes and textures of things. It's interesting. There's a lot of variety though, different regions and buildings have completely unique character and vibe.

Hey speaking of the fully developed fantasy world, I want to learn more about Breton, where my character came from. Does anyone know the best place to find out about that stuff that is NOT on the island?

Hm, I kinda agree. Not like a Star Trek sci-fi, but definately a Dune-ish feel. In fact, I've learned a little about the Ashlanders and their religious beliefs and it got me thinking about Muad'Dib and the Fremen a lot. It's not really overt, but I think it's got some of that flavor, for sure, with the dust-storms and all of that.

You know... a Dune mod would be really terrific.

The dwarven armor set if you have all of it looks slightly protoss also reminiscent of the fifth element aliens.

Yeah I think there are a few Sci-Fi'ish type things around, but also many fantasy things. But regardless of what it is..I love it.

Funny you should mention this as I was just perusing the manual once again last night to try and find what time period this was set in. I find it hard to beilieve this is a typical fanatasy camelot time period type of game because its just way to sci fi ish. That is a good thing though IMO camelot type RPGing is rather played out and sci fi is nowhere to be found its about time for something like this and im really glad Morrowind is starting this trend hopefully more developers will follow suit.

Its all fantasy though regardless if its sci fi ish or camelotish its all still fantasy.
