When I start a new game of Gothic, it loads, and I can see the opening movie just fine. Then when the actual game starts, all I see is a gray haze, and some blue lightning in the background. I can barely see the outline of the feet of two characters, I think...
Anyway, my system is:
P3 550 MHz
128 MB RAM
ATI Rage Pro Turbo AGP 2x
What is going on? Can I possibly fix it, or have I wasted $50??
please help =/

yeah I'm no tech guy but something to try, turn your viewing distance up to 300% that may cut through more fog.
probably an issue with your vidcard though, |

I had this issue with the demo, as well, if I remember correctly it was something in the Direct3D settings, something about fog table emulation maybe? |

The readme file for the game says that your video card can cause this problem
(Rage 128 Bad performance and graphic problems)
Also your ram is quite low for this game
Think about upgrading both and Gothic will love you for it.

Hey thanks for responding... How exactly do you mess with the Direct3D settings? I have DirectX 8.0, I think.
very confused...
BTW, even if I have low (128 MB) RAM, I should still be getting a picture, not the gray stuff, right? The RAM should only affect the FPS and performance, no?

Yeah ram is for Fame Rate basicly. But the Video Card is the real problem you got to find out what to do with the video card in the readme file it should tell you.
Also did you try the patch?

Maggot is right, this is a well known driver issue.
You can either use the forum-search to find the correct name of the driver options you have to manipulate or open the gothic.ini with an editor and set zFogDisable=1.

Amazingly, I also have a Rage Pro 8 meg card, and I had the problem he describes, first of all he needs to go to http://www.rage3d.com , and get the newest rageman drivers, and install them as instructed, by totally removing the old drivers from the system, and registry. The driver sets contain read me files which should be followed for a good working install. I am using the fdv3 driver set, but the site has a newer version listed.
Secondly, I changed my virtual swap file as suggested, to twice the amount of ram I have, and lastly I set the view to 100%, and turned the fog off as suggested. I am now running the game with no problems, well, except for some slow down, at 50% texture setting, 100% model setting. My system??
350 P2
8 meg rage pro
224 megs ram
This game is awesome, by the way, I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it is. Don't ever discount the low fi systems, sometimes they suprise us all. |

I had the same problem
sytem:
AMD Athlon 1.2 ghz
512 mb Ram
60 gb hard drive
windows 98
grafics card SiS 730
The problem was the grafics card. But, if you want to play the game there is an option.
Go into the Gothic configuration settings, (to get there use FIND FILE, type GOTHIC and look for Gothic configurations (about 5 kb).
next scroll down the page until you reach, zStartupWindowed=0. Change the 0 to a 1. This will cause the game to play in a windows mode. It is not the best solution (the game runs slower, and you can't get the full visual effects of the game, but it should let you play it.)
Hope this helps you! |
