Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Preview @ Gamespy

Ostensibly wandering around the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas, the editors of Gamespy found a running demo for Oblivion and have posted their thoughts and preview.
There's definitely a lot to like about The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, but one element stands out more than anything else. This is truly a sandbox game, where every action will result in some sort of reaction. During the demo, our hero accidentally set an innocent villager on fire, prompting a local guard to rush up to us. Our demoer said that he usually paid the requested fine, but he actually listened to me when I said, "Screw that guy, kill him!" After battling for a few moments, we ducked into the local mage's union. According to the guy manning the controller, in every previous demo, the hero was able to join the union.

This time, however, the union's leader refused to let us join because our hero was now "a wanted criminal." Even better, the guard miraculously didn't forget about our trangressions, actually following us into the building, slashing at us until we killed him. This turn of events caused the demoer to proclaim, "Oh wow, I've never seen that happen" a number of times, which is always a good sign that a game will have a lot of surprises (and even better, replay value) for those players who enjoy unpredictability. After seeing The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in action, we want it more than ever.
You can read the rest at Gamespy.

While the majority of the preview is pretty standard gushing and drooling, the thing that really stuck with me was:
quote:
A first-person RPG that takes 50 to 100 hours to complete might be a bit much for some people to swallow.

They nailed that ... we're all looking for more FPS length RPG's like Fable

50 - 100 hours? Bring it on ...

If Oblivion is a 8 out of 10 or better I will be happy but with Gothic 3 I hope 9 out of 10 or better.

Hey, btw what catagoy does Gamespy have RPGs in this week, Barbie Dance Magic

Seems like for everything they improve, they dumb down or simply remove a bunch more features. The series has lost its magic since heading to consoles, and Bethesda is so "mass market" focused I doubt it will ever be great again. I hope they go under before they release Fallout 3.

Yeah, I hope the publisher of Call of Cthulhu goes out of business before they release something I don't want to play. It's better to have no game than a flawed game, particularly in the RPG category. Who needs more of those?

Take-2 isn't about to go out of business (the publisher of CotC). Bethesda should, though. Crash and burn you bastards.

people give em a chance. If the game is as good as the videos are promising, then it'll be a great game. Of course the vids didn't show the quests, the items, all the small specific things that make a game unique, entertaining -the new king of rpgs- (which it claims it will be). I'm just happy that we (probably) see 2 grand FP(S)-RPGs, which if not everything goes wrong will be at least upper average (no more dungeon siege). I'm more concerned about the power of my pc-system ...

wanted to write "dungeon lords" but "dungeon siege" is correct as well

Oh you little gutter-snipes are just trying to rile here.
"crash and burn you bastards" lol

Bethesda is alright, I've bought and enjoyed their games thus far, certainly better than nothing. Yeah theres some bugs and problems here and there, but the only game I've logged more time in than Morrowind is an MMORPG.

I can assure you that theres far more people on my side of this equation than yours. We'll fork over the cash when Oblivion is released, not only to enjoy the game itself, but to support a company that we like. Meanwhile, you can sit around and gnash your teeth at this or that you hate. Have fun

I can understand why people are unhappy with Bethesda...after all, Morrowind was an abysmal game. A horrible disappointment that, while financially successful, was nowhere near as deep or complex as Daggerfall or Arena.

Still, it's obvious to anyone with half a brain that Oblivion has corrected these mistakes and will be just as deep as Daggerfall...though hopefully not as incomplete.

I look at it this way, Bethesda needed money and prestige to get away with a game like ES:O. A good old fashioned Arena-esque 100 hour juggernaut with state of the art graphics and extreme depth...a combination that we don't see too often. Morrowind gave them the money and prestige to attempt something like this. Now they are ready to win us Arena/Daggerfall nerds back.

I'm ready. I have my game pre-purchased. Let's do this.
