Do you have to play the main quest in order to advance the plot because im finding it much more enjoyable being a thief and doing jobs,But I want more of the story.

From what a lot of people have said the main quest can be done, but you can also go on a tangent. Most people right now are finding it enjoyable to just wander about. Yeah there does seem to be some trouble that people are having with unlocking the story. But I would wonder if the story of morrowwind is a good amount told in text and books and the rest of it through one's own actions. We only play one person at a time in the game who can only do so much. How much of oneself can be expected to be told?

You can level up without proceed with main quests, but if you want more story to be uncovered for you, you need to visit "quest" npcs, and proceed with main quests.
