Found Thief Guild but still can't bust them

I got the key from Atila, and went to the hideout, but I am not able to "report in" to get credit for solving the quest - no dialogue option appears. What do I have to do to get this one off the books? DO I have to kill the head honcho?

don't kill the thieves join them or at least do thier first quest and get constatino ring it opens up options like places to buy picklocks(in abundance) and sell silver for a good price I think it's worth it and for doing thier quest u get xp anyway to bust them u need to kill'em all jesper cassia and the other dude and then report in do not report only on thier hideout because andre will send paladins and will kill them(no xp for u at all)

Got to join the mercenaries - they're ready to accept me now anyway. Guess I won't finish some of those quests.
