In the world of Morrowind

Hi Everyone, I was here awhile back for advice on getting my system upgraded for this game. I have a P4 1.6ghz, 640 ddr ram, gf ti200, and a turtle beach santa cruz (those last 3 all being upgrades.) Oh, and running WinXP.

My order from Bethsoft never came through. Now, don't get all uppity, I'm not going to bash them. They get my highest respect for creating this game but they really look like they're in over their heads when it comes to retail. So, I cancelled that order and bought a copy locally just yesterday(yes, my little local game store in a town of about 20,000 actually had it.)

I can't say that I have a lot of experience with RPGs. I played BG I and II, and then Dungeon Siege (which is not an RPG really, but kinda fun for a few days--the most fun i had with it was in MP). Given that, I absolutely LOVE this game. First of all, it is stunning visually (like you haven't heard that before?). My gf3 ti200 is doing a very good job. I've got shadows at 3/4's, background at 3/4's, pixel shader on, high sound quality, 1024X768, 32 bit. I just had to enable the FPS readout after all the hoopla about framerates. I'm getting 15 at the lowest, but most of the time btw 30 and 40, and often up to the 60's. The only time things really bog down to the point where I feel affronted is maybe in the city in the middle of a t-storm. But even then, it's running waaaay better than I thought it would after all the complaints I've heard. I want to interject that I can't help but think that some of us old geezers (I'm 43) are able to more fully realize the graphical achievement in this game. Now, youngins, don't get defensive, all I'm saying is that you've grown up with this stuff. I can still vividly remember my first happy days, about 15 years, ago playing Pool of Radiance on the Commadore 64. Do you remember? Then you know exactly what i'm talking about. The little stick figures, the 10 minute load times for one disk (and it was an 8 disk game!). Heh, I'm starting to sound like one of those adults from my childhood, "Why, I used to walk 10 miles to school! Barefoot! In the snow!!" Anyway, I digress...

The gameplay. Is it immersive? Wow, it is for me. So much so that I'd say it's as much an experience as it is a game. I can see, though, it's going to take some time to master. But that's a good thing, because what's the fun if you have it figured out in one day? That's one of the (many) things DS didn't have (no, don't get off track, I'm not really trying to compare the two, it's just DS is the game I played last). I personally like this pace that some would call 'slow'. It gives me time to think, explore, and ponder what to do next. Anyway, that's made up for in combat (which isn't particlularly slow ). I do NOT like combat. Combat has never been my forte. I'm starting to gain a little skill as a mage (if anyone is curious, I'm playing a Khajiit mage. Whya khagiit for a mage? Because I love cats . And hey, the agility and speed don't hurt either. I love taking flights of steps in a single bound ) Should it really take half my magicka to kill a rat? I know, I know, we start out very weak, but it does make one verrry leary of confrontation. And some suggest running away? Ummm, just let me say it doesn't always work.

OK, I won't make a book out of this, but I know people who still don't have the game want to hear from people playing it (I know I did!) My score? 9.5/10, only because of some minor quibbles. I can say with confidence that I will get more than my money's worth out of the game (and the upgrades to my PC!), and will be playing it for a loooong time. I can't imagine having to think about buying another game for months at least.

I'm sure I'll be back later to get some pointers. But for now it's...

Back to Morrowind,

sphinxlet
