Somehow, I managed to close the gate to the old mine. I read a previous post where someone said to activate marvin mode and teleport thru it. Id rather not cheat...so is there any other way of getting it open other than cheating?

No there is not. That gate closing happened to me too. It is a bug and in this game a bug must be squashed by cheating. You should not have any quilty feelings or something, a bug is a bug is a bug. It's that simple
