Fallout: BoS (PS2) - Review @ IGN

Also on IGN is a review of Interplay's 'Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel' for Playstation 2 and they rated this one at 7.5/10.
As 2003 wound to a close, Interplay axed its Black Isle division due to financial difficulties. Presumably, this puts an end to Fallout 3, a PC title that had been in development and was to follow up the popular Fallout and Fallout 2 that had come out in 1997 and 1998, respectively. Keeping their focus on the console market, Interplay is instead continuing to come out with Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, an action title with some RPG elements that was developed by Interplay and takes place in the Fallout universe. What then takes place is a classic hackfest that's set in a post-apocalyptic world. While it won't make you think too much, it's got enough action for a Saturday afternoon.

Of course, all this could be forgiven if Fallout was still an engaging RPG, the same way Dark Alliance was. Unfortunately, this seems to be the only feature of DA the developers didn't copy. After that first scorpion hunt, you're sent off on a seemingly endless series of fetch quests and extermination missions, one after the other, without much to break the tedium with. You're faced with graphics that show polish in some spots, but all sorts of slowdown and splotchiness in others. You've got characters that move jerkily and have nothing near the pretty animation of Dark Alliance. Most importantly, though (especially for fans of the PC Fallout), you've got an RPG without any sort of enticing story. You can forget about the castes of mutants you saw in the original -- here, they're all fodder for your spiked gloves or machine gun. Fallout's trademark humor is replaced with pointless cursing and boring dialogue that goes nowhere. The music is also nonexistent, save for wholly inappropriate heavy metal during the boss battles -- didn't Interplay learn their lesson with the bad metal they used in Run Like Hell?

This, in a nutshell, is why Brotherhood of Steel feels like a disappointment -- not only does it offer nothing exciting to Dark Alliance fans, but it will also serve to alienate fans of the original Fallout games, possibly spelling the end of the series as a whole in the process. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but the only things flattered by BoS are Dark Alliance II and Champions of Norrath -- its main competition. If you want an RPG bash-'em-up, wait for the other two games. You'll be glad you did.

As a huge fallout fan I'am in minority here 'couse to me this looks pretty good. Fallout it isn't but then again this is a console action game. I see this as a Fallout version of an "updated Diablo" - ie: no thinking required, but as far as I recall Diablo is alot of fun to play and when you look at it like that it looks damn good !. Grafix are great at least. And if you never played BG:DA then it should appeal to you even more since it'll be all new, and if you did play BG:DA then you also might like it 'couse of the familiar interface/feel.

It's true that this is kind of Fallut without the things that made Fallout great and with good grafix added, but hey, it;s better then no Fallout at all.

Not that I will ever play this game 'couse I do not have a console nor will I purchase one in the near future.
