Morrowind, unlinearity, complaints and roleplaying.
   

Atleast some of you (Maybe MOST of you) here have played MMORPGs, like me. I am a long time MMORPG player starting from Asheron's Call, then Anarchy Online, and Dark Age of Camelot. In all of those games I have been a beta tester (I dont mean the public beta tests here).

All modern MMORPGs have the main failure built in, you have to KILL stuff to LEVEL UP! To gain experience for your avatar you have to KILL gazillions of monsters to gain experience for your own character. There mostly is NO way to do it other way. This is the fault of ALL modern MMORPGs, INCLUDING EVERQUEST, but *NOT* including Ultima Online which has a really good character developlent system. IMHO, modern MMORPGS should take atleast some example of UO.

So, considering what I said above. I am a roleplayer: If I want kill constantly I can play quake, but I do not want to play Quake if I want to roleplay.

Character development is more than just killing enemies. Too many games forget this fact.

The modern roleplaying games promise to offer more (I expect a LOT from Asheron's Call 2). Actually they promise to offer a lot more, but we will see.

How ever, to make this rant short. IN single player games, In the past DAGGERFALL tried and now MORROWIND is trying to break the damn tradition of DIABLO style (no thinking required(tm)) games and trying to implement something that requires the PLAYERS to take some action. The player should be the responsible of developing his/her character! WHAT DO *I* want to play? *HOW* do I want to play? *WHEN* do I want to do this quest? Do I *WANT TO DO* this quest at all?

In single player games ROLEPLAYING is one of the key factors. You take responsibility of your play character and develop it as you wish, and optimally you get certain response from the other inhabitants of the world about your progress (like in MW). In single player games you do not have other HUMAN players to worry about (as in MMORPGS). In single player games the focus is *YOU*. And Morrowind is the perfect example of a game that has *YOU* in the focus. So why do you complain? What is more perfect that to let you to have a TOTAL CHOICE what to do? Let you decide of everything you want to do, unlike some other modern games (like Dungeon Siege, which is entertaining but very linear! I've played it through atleast 3 times

Morrowind does not have a clear plot, YOU HAVE TO FIND IT OUT! Think, explore, investigate, solve! As you wish!

If you do not like the plot, develop your own, do something else, don't follow the main plot at all. Develop your character, join guilds and do missions. There are plenty to do.

You do not like the missions? Then do not do the missions at all, explore the world, go as free as you would like to, roam the continent, explore the dungeons and raid the enemies (whichever you want to think your enemy is).

Morrowind is a *FREE* world, you, yourself, can imagine and BUILD your future. It is the best thing that has happened *so far* for us roleplayers. It is a single player game and you should know me personally to know that by saying this I mean a lot. Because I am a MMORPG nut, complete nut

I just hope such a game comes as a MMORPG where we can try the same things with thousands of other human players! Interactive world and NPCs (gothic) + the great depth of Morrowind. Combining that into a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (MMORPG) would make such a hit that it would have a huge impact over the gaming community that exists at the moment...

I have to make an addition to my above post.

My current character is a guild leader of Mages Guild and he also is a councellor of Hlaalu, level 23 at the moment with pretty good equipment. But the *great* fact is that I have under 40% of the whole continent explored. I have SO MANY THINGS TO DO in this game until I can drop my gloves to the desk and say, "I am off to the next game". Morrowind is a great thing for us players, not perfect by all means but in all, a great experience.

Just live it, experience it. And Have fun, thats what it is all about.

P.S. I have a pretty modern computer and have frame rates of under 10fps in certain areas. But what is best, the game is very playable The content makes it something special.

Heh - You got it 100% man. I have been a gamer of all genres, played hundreds of games and everytime I play a new game I have learned to expect the worst cause 99% of games made are nothing but hype and pretty packaging, maybe I'm overly sensitive to how games now aren't FUN but I know what FUN is and MW is def FUN! MW has successfully balanced high-end gameplay/depth/graphics into an outstanding game, unlike anyother game. Game after game, disappointment after disappointment gaming has been pretty bleak for awhile now then BAM ! MW finally comes out and pulls through. Take it for what it is, enjoy it, have FUN with it cause it is nothing but FUN! Wether your playing Atari/NES/PS/N64/PS2/XBoX or whatever the main thing is you have fun, graphics wont make you have fun, depth/interface/gamplay will though. MW has finally done what no other game has IMO. *holds a unlit torch away from face....

P.S. Im not saying MW is the best game ever, it is way up there for sure but when a great game comes out as any progamer knows, you jump on it and savor it till the last drop.

I agree entirely. I've played all adventure and roleplaying games since 1983 and all MMORPGs since 1987 as well as a load of MUDs. This game doesn't just take some beating, its the best there's been.

The reason is partly what's already been said - total freedom. When I load it up for a session, shall I explore? Do a guild quest? Which one, I belong to several.....what about a House quest? Take the main story a stage further? Ransack a tomb, cave or dungeon? What about that citizen I met down the road, shall I do what he asked me to do? There are so many choices....

The other reason is because of the extraordinary and unprecedented opportunities offered by the plug-in concept. This game has no end, it can simply be expanded by the players and by Bethesda as long as people are having fun playing it, and most really are having fun.

I think a lot of the people that actually like the game knew what they should expect in terms of gameplay.

Daggerfall was my first experience with a game that didn't tell you what to do every second. I loved that. I still do and when I fire up MW I really get into it my character. I have fun. I am creating a character that I want to play.

My main character is a Khajit Thief: I steal everything. If it's not bolted down and worth more than 5 gp, it's probably in my pocket when I leave. However, he's got a soft spot for women and never steals from a woman. Why? Why not? Confused the hell out of my GF the other day when I walked into three different merchants but only cleared out the guys. I tried to explain it to her but I don't think she got it. She walked away from my desk shaking her head in pity.

I think that people who aren't into real RPGs won't enjoy this game as much. I think they are the one's that are complaining most vocally about the speed of the game and the frame rates.

But what the hell do I know?

most people don't _really_ like rpgs. they just think they do.

why?

because bad men and women keep making games that are labeled as rpgs because they have a fantasy element. but there are no roles for you to play. you follow instructions and kill anything that moves.

so?

so who cares what those people say. those of us who love rpgs think this game is overflowing with rpg goodness, and that's all that matters.

oh. ok.

I like the game because there is something to do besides fight.
I have been playing for a week and haven't got to Balmora yet.

I have started 4 characters and settled on two that I will continue with.
One is a magic user primarily and the other is a thief.
One is male one is female.

I have taken notes to highwaymen and robbed several tombs as well as holding off advances from another highwayman. I've traded and trained and am having a blast.

I'm in no hurry to get to the end. I don't care if it takes me months.

Pretty soon I will dig out the editor and start on that I have several ideas I want to try out.

Right on bro. I agree 100%. That's why I'm so excited to play MW when it comes out. To actually roleplay....

As for the mmorpg, well maybe star wars galaxies will do it right. I always said that I would never pay a monthly fee to play a game but I might have to try that game. But I hope to God that single-player rpg's like MW will still be made. Thank you Bethesda !!!!!!!!!!!

As for Dungeon Siege -- finished it 2 days ago. Got bored with it after 15 hrs of play. I knew it would be light, but MAN ! So I was looking forward to using the DS editor and ... it's still not out ( full version-the beta is a joke). This is another reason I'm looking forward to MW. They release a completed, ready to be put to use editor with the game. That's the way you do that GPS! Man I can't wait to create the game of my dreams and on top of that have others play it! That ROCKS !!!!!!!!!

Morrowind I see more as modding for the game *I* want to play. For the game I want OTHERS to play I'm getting Neverwinter Nights. That way I can judge how other are reacting to my hard work because I'm overseeing how they go through it.

New to RPG's here. Couldn't stand the others. How can you call a game where you control 8 people from a 3/4 top down perspective an RPG? That is RTS folks!

As far as MW is concerned, being new to RPG's I don't seem to be progressing as fast as the rest of you, but I think that is a good thing. Monsters are still hard to kill. I have left the main quest and am now doing a tomb raider stint, mostly grabbing souls and trading up for a kick ass enchantment. When I get it I will head off to Ashland to resume the quest. Or maybe not.
