I love Gothic by the way I just really disliked the look of the main character. His little goatee made me want to headbut him and stomp on his head 42 times in rapid succession.
But it does make it slightly easier to bear when you die for the hunderedth time. 'OK, my character died... but he looked like Noel Edmunds anyway so it's not a massive tragedy'

One more note -----> STOP THE TREND OF DUMBING DOWN GAMES PLEASE OR I WILL QUIT PLAYING THEM. IT IS NOT A CRIME TO MAKE PLAYERS THINK AND TRY HARD TO WIN/SUCCEED IN THE GAME. DITCH YOUR EGO AND YOUR DESIRE TO MAKE IT EASY TO SEE THE WHOLE GAME. MAKE US OVERCOME CHALLENGES TO SUCCEED IN THE GAME AND WE WILL APPRECIATE OUR SUCCESSES MUCH MUCH MORE.
I have to disagree with you here i'm afraid. There's no reason for a user to be subjected to pages and pages of numbers when all they want to do is explore the town or go out on a day trip to the black forest. Hardcore RPG's are good at doing this, but not many games give a Crystal clear view of how your character is developing (Dungeon siege does, gothic (surprisingly) does a good job too). Gothic is very near perfection, it just falls down on user interface. It's a nightmare to control. The sequel did improve things a lot though. Best control scheme i think is in neverwinter nights. easy, concise and slick.

I love Gothic, I even really like the original controls and I use the old school scheme for the Gothic 2 demo (cause I don't have the full game yet). I actually think they bodged shopping with their rework though.
I just think it is important to at least provide a few different faces and a few different skin tones for character creation. Why does the PC have to be a white guy with a goatee? I can fully understand why you would have to be male (but I could easily think of an awesome scenario within that game for a female PC) but I do not understand nor approve of their decision to force you to be a white guy with a goatee. Why not a white guy with face tatoos? Or just a white guy without a goatee. Or a black guy maybe, or an oriental or even an aboriginal type fellow. |
