I don't know anything about programing, but; in a FPS your options are very limited. You are probably going to shoot just about everything. Therefore, the people that you run into are programed to react to being shot at or killed. While in a RPG, the NPGs would be harder to program (I believe) because your reaction to them varies from asking them a question, robbing them, killing them, asking them to join up with you, etc. Like I said, I don't know anything about programing; but I think you asking for a lot if you want NPGs to act more like FPS NPGs.

This was an actual reply, not one of my cheap posts to reach that 1000th post mark

@goofy, we are most likely in the same side Who wouldn't want to see AI improving in games. I still maintain my point that this a apples vs. oranges-type of comparison.

This is interesting, though. I've rarely even think about the combat AI in CRPGs. I mostly view combat as a necessary evil in CRPGs, although I can't say I don't enjoy it, IF I'm playing a combat-oriented character.

And since 'serious' CRPGs are not in a very stable platform, I'd hate to see them fall back into oblivion with an onslaught of pure combat RPGs, so maybe I'm a bit defensive here . It's only been few years since the whole genre seemed to be doomed forever, with RTS and FPS taking the spotlight from good old military strategy games, simulations and CRPGs/adventures. Real strategy games have fallen into oblivion, simulations try to hang on and adveture games are all but dead. Without some outstanding hits from the CRPG genre, there would be no RPGDot...

Hmmm... I still have to think of Thief. Those enemy AI guys were pretty clever; they got the jitters and alerted their comrades when they saw blood on the floor after you killed one of their mates, for example, they actually went back to get reinforcements if they didn't manage to overpower you, etc. (somewhat like the HL marines, just better). I remember one level which consisted of a multi-storied mansion. I was too loud and thus a guard noticed me and raised an alarm... and suddenly my old comp (which was, at the time, a PII 233) stood still when all the guards in the huge house went into a state of alertness .

They also burned to death if you decided to hide their unconscious bodies in an oven .

Nay, i won't demand a revolution in CRPGs. Anyhow, actually there was already some new CRPGs with better NPCs/opponents' A.I. I remember few weeks ago here in RPGdot had a review of ARX FATALIS by Garett or Gorath (sorry i can't remember which one! ). He gaves some praises on enemy A.I in that game; for example when the opponents is outnembered, he will called for help or alerting others...etc etc. This is just some A.I elements that already introduced in FPS. That is also why i hope to see more better NPCs' A.I in CRPGs.

Is Max Payne an example of good AI or good scripting? Any comments? Also, I like the AI in Jedi Outcast.

I saw this in a movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode. I think it was called, "The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down."
