It doesn't sound like you've downloaded the demo.

You'd need a very powerful laptop to run Gothic on it.

But yes, you can become any magician you want, and more.

The great thing about Gothic is that you can play every role: fighter, mage and thief. You can lean in one direction if you want.

But you have to understand that Gothic is not just another RPG. You don't "play a mage" per se. You play a guy who must be able to live in Myrtana by any means possible. That might mean fireballing a group of orcs one minute, or stealing from somebody the next. Or, bashing in someone's head.

Spell variety is excellent. Although you can only get runes for one camp early in the game, you can use scrolls from all camps. And later in the game you start to get runes that you can use regardless of what camp you joined. Spellcasting in Gothic is a LOT of fun, and they look great.

The only downer is that you can't "lead" a target. So once you get swarmed by multiple enemies that are running all over the place, it's better to pull out a sword and start wacking. That is, if the monsters every get to you as a caster
