I finished the game as a melee and now wish to play as a Mage. It appears that if one joins the New Camp (to go as a Water Mage) it is MUCH later in the game that you actually get to be a Mage and learn magic. Is that correct or am I missing something? If this is true, then the game is more than half over by the time you get to be a Mage - which makes little sense. Is the path any faster as a Fire Mage? Thanks in advance for your help here.

If you join the Sect camp, you can learn magic as soon as you join, but you will max out at circle 4. Even though it's a class-less system, they still made it extremely tailored to the fighter "class". I hope they will balance the "classes" in Gothic 2, if there will be one.

You say one can be a Fire Mage from level 10? Is your acceptance simply tied to level or must you have reached a certain point in the story (be in a certain chapter)?

If you wanna play the game as a mage then join OC, I think you can begin as a firemage as soon as you have done the mindcrawler queen quest and are ready to become a guard, then say you are interested in the path of magic when you talk to Thorus

Yes you must reach certain point in story (if you want to join firemages in OC). As soon as you will be able to become a guard, you can say to Thorus: "no, I do not want to be guard, I want to be mage", after that just speak to leader of firemages.
I personaly must say, that magics is useful only in later parts of game (chapter 5 and 6). I was skilled bowman and it was better and quicker to use bow then to cast some spell.
But in temple of sleaper in chapter 5, you will have very very strong spell (if you find where to buy it), this spell will be strong specially for this dungeons, where skeletons, skeleton warriors etc. walk.
I think, that you can not be just mage. You must be ranger-mage. But it is still nice way. I love magic in all rpgs and love it in Gothic.
