can't kill humans?

when I knock one down, I somehow couldn't kill him by using ctrl+up when he is highlighted, all i do is an overhead chop...help?

I think you should have sword equiped (not hammer, mace...).
I have never heard about bug like that.
So simply equip sword, knock him down and when he is lieing on the ground press up+use and you character should kill him...

Or use arrow or magic. They both kill.
