Slots in game:
1. melee weapon
2. bow
3. crossbow
4. scroll/rune
5. scroll/rune
.
.
.
0. scroll/rune

You can equip 6 scroll/runes in one time. Just press up+use button when they are active in your inventory. You will see number in right_down corner. You can then equip them in same way as weapons (just by pressing hot key - 4 or 5 or 6...).

Scrolls are for "one time" using. But you do not need any ability to use them (only enough mana).
Runes are for repeated using. Every rune belongs to certain magic circle (there are 6 magic circles in game). You need to learn magic circle to be able to use rune.

In reality, crossbow and bow are both physical damage Ranged weapons. Hotkey for both is 2. Have you ever seen anyone carrying a bow and a crossbow on his back?

To original poster:
When you equip a weapon (goto the inv, [default=tab] press ctrl+up)... there will be a Number in top right corner... red colored. If you selected a melee weapon, it will always be 1. If it was a bow or a crossbow, it will be 2.

You can equip runes and scrolls in the same way as weapons. (highlight it, and press ctrl+up) A number will appear in top right corner. By pressing that number on your keyboard (number keys that are above letters) you activate that Rune or Scroll. Scroll are ONE USE items. However, you may carry several of them. If you have more than one Scroll in your inv, you'll see a yellow colored number in bottom left corner.
Scrolls can be used as long as you have the mana to support them. (Be aware! Even if you're going to be a fighter or an archer, you'll need at least 10 mana for one of the focus stones - one with telekenesis scrolls. Always put some points in mana... or you'll have to run back to Water Mages and get some mana from Cronus )

Hotkeys:
1-melee weapon
2-bow/xbow
3-Last used spell
4
---- Spells.
0 /

Note, that if you forgot the number of the Scroll/rune, you can select any rune, then press and hold SPACEBAR to see all the runes/scrolls you have activated.

You cannot use runes unless you become a mage. (check your statistics by going into character info window. Default button in English version is B)

Yes, if you equip both bow and crossbow, you have them both on your back at same time. Try it...

I tried it:
3 is really for last spell
2 is for bow and crossbow, but you can equip one bow and one crossbow at same time, both have number 2 in inventory. I had them both on my back, but I was able to equip only bow.

That's a bug. Once I've seen Wolf have like 3 axes, 1 xbow and 2 bows on his back. I was "surprised" pretty much. Hehe.
