Did you try to disable sound?
Are you sure all your drivers are updated, ALL other programs closed and you donīt use overclocking tools, etc.?

I got an idea...how about getting a new computer that is powerful enough to handle a demanding game like Gothic?
If you want great games with a lot of complexity, depth and good graphics, you need a great computer. If you want poor games with poor graphics, stick with a poor computer(or buy a console).

That because the game has a crappy graphics engine, bad programming code, and it's riddled with bugs. Try returning it and getting any other at least semi-popular new game out there, you should have no problem with most of them. I got returned Gothic and got American McGee's Alice. Alice is an awesome game with kick-ass graphics (way better than Gothic's graphics). And Alice has a really cool and twisted storyline.

RETURN GOTHIC?! RETURN GOTHIC?!

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!

RETURNING GOTHIC SHOULD BE AGAINST THE LAW!!! IT WOULD BE AN ACT OF INSANITY, I TELL YOU, INSANITY!!!

LOL!!!
seriously, dont return gothic, its the best rpg ive ever played.

Wish I could help you, but I havent had need to mess around with the files yet (hopefully I never will).

Best of luck.

I was using drivers that came right in the box a year ago and every game I had was working perfectly. I updated to the latest drivers (I figured... ah, what the hell. It's been a year.)... and now no game will run on my computer (including Gothic).

It just figures.
