I was thinking of finally joining the ranks of the true RPG enthusiasts on this board and playing through Avernum 1 - 3 and Geneforge 1 - 2. Now, that's about $100 dollars worth of software. My question is, which series should I destroy first? Played the Avernum 3 demo awhile back, and liked it, but was sucked into some MMoG at the time. Opinions needed/wanted/desired, just give me a push in the right direction.

I've only played the demos, but it seems like anywhere you start is a good choice. I'm starting with the Geneforge series since I'm a poor college student and don't want to spend all my money right away.

I'd suggest Geneforge too, but Val's the expert here, so I'd wait for her advice.

I've only played the Geneforge series - which I can highly recommend - it's a very original world/setting. Avernum has a smaller view window which I struggled with. His latest, 'Blades of Avernum' was released for the Mac last Friday and the Windows version will be along in a few months if you want to "get in front" of a series.

I prefer the medieval setting that Avernum provides. But basically you can't go wrong with anything by Spiderweb. Their games are affordable and don't require a supercomputer to run, they deserve the support. If you liked the Avernum demo, I'd say go with Blades of Avernum when it comes out because you can download new adventure modules and make your own with the included toolkit.

Downloaded Avernum 1 after reading the message boards at the Spiderweb site. Seems most of the folks there are really into Exile (Avernum being the remake).

An excellent choice. The Avernum series is a good one to start out with. If you like party-based games, it'll definately be your cup of tea.
The Geneforge series is also highly enjoyable and has such a cool twist to it. It's one of the most original series of games that I have ever played.

I've played only the demos of all 3 Avernums, as well as the demo of Geneforge (1), and I must say I like the latter better -> the setting is somthing absolutely marvellous, and I am now saving for the 25 bucks I need to fing out what the Geneforge exactly is...
And I must say that although it seems that Avernum (1) is the best of the 3, I didn't quite like that I didn't see a quest log in there, as opposed to the later titles.

I like Geneforge better. The setting is unique and the idea of controlling a party of minions is more appealing to me

Get Geneforge 2, which I think is better than the original.
