I solved it!!
I turned on Direct Draw hardware acceleration and now the game works great.
DirectDraw acceleration was off, because some 2D games used to be slideshow with it turned on (bug in NVidia ...

I've tried:

Anti Aliasing OFF and 4x
both twice with Application Controlled ON and OFF
and both with Ansitropic Filtering ON and OFF

I've also tried the above settings with the softfog setting ...

I have an AMD 2800+ with a GeForce FX 5600 and a AMD 1333 with a GeForce 4200 TI (both Windows XP and Direct X90.b). Both systems have 1 gig of ram and the latest windows updates installed.
