Game of the Year 2004 Awards: Best MMORPG
Myrthos, 2005-02-25

The last couple of weeks you could vote for the best RPGs and MMORPGs that have been released in 2004. Not us but you the player decide who receives the RPGDot 2004 Awards in the various categories. We thank all those who entered their votes and helped us in making it possible to select the best games of 2004.

Best MMORPG

The biggest award is handed out for the game that is considered to be the best MMORPG of 2004.

The winner: World of Warcraft
Critically acclaimed and with sales of around 1 million units in the first few months, it comes as little surprise to see World of Warcraft voted Best MMORPG. While the genre was originally defined by the success of titles like Ultima Online and EverQuest, World of Warcraft has truly become a gaming phenomenon that has brought massively multiplayer gaming to the attention of mainstream gamers. That it also manages to please so many veteran players is a testament to a design that puts "fun" first and foremost as a central philosophy and allows players the freedom to play as they choose, along with beautiful art and a level of polish that sets a new standard.

Runner Up: Everquest 2
It's easy to see EverQuest II as a clear loser to World of Warcraft but that ignores initial sales that would please almost any other MMO on the market. A carefully crafted MMORPG from an experienced design team, EverQuest II seeks to refine the central gameplay of EverQuest along with better solo accessibility and with graphics and sound that are far ahead of the competition on a technical level. Following a basically flawless launch, Sony Online has continued to improve EQ2 with tons of additional content and regular updates.

Second Runner Up: City of Heroes
As we have already stated in the other categories of the GOTY 2004, City of Heroes really deserves its third position given by our readers to have brought online a game which delivers one of the largest amounts of fun of these last years. It is perhaps not the most revolutionary or the most ambitious but it guarantees you many hours of pleasure while protecting the good citizens of Paragon City. Give it a try, you'll surely not regret it. Walking down the street in some flashy underwears is always a good memory !
