Icewind Dale 2 Q&A at PCG Central

An interview with Kevin Osburn, line producer on the upcoming RPG sequel. Here's what IWD 2 will offer that he first game didn't:
What is Icewind Dale II going to offer that the first game did not?

IWD2 will offer the player a variety of different things, from new 3rd Edition D&D rules we have implemented, a new interface, and wider variety of player scripts. Also we have taken a lot of puzzle situations from Trials of the Luremaster, our free dungeon set for Heart of Winter, and implemented more of these types of puzzles into IWD2. We are trying to provide a mixture of both elements from IWD playing style and TOTL playing style, while adding some new elements that were not seen in previous IWD games. We will also be including new player character races, and subraces (never before seen in IE games).

Warcraft 3 Preview at Gamespot

(PC: Single-Player RPG) | Posted by Rendelius @ 23:33 - Top

Gamespot has posted a preview of Warcraft 3 - Reign of Chaos. Here's soething from that, about changes for the Orcs:
Perhaps an even bigger switch for the orcs is the disappearance of the pig farm. That basic structure from the days of Warcraft II was too much like the human farm. The orcs now build orc burrows to expand their population limit, and these sunken buildings also double as defensive bunkers. Burrows were in the initial beta release, but they weren't used much since Warcraft III's relatively low maximum population limit is just 90, much lower than Starcraft, and this makes it hard to permanently garrison bunkers. Now that any orc player needs burrows in any case, it's easy enough to just place them at base entrances for when an opponent attacks. The orcs also now have a separate defensive structure, the watch tower, which can hit air or ground targets.

Tilted Mill Interview @ RPGvault

Posted by Moriendor @ 19:50 - Top
Huh? Tilted Mill? Never heard of that game...
Right. You can't have. Tilted Mill is a game development studio, founded by the former lead designer and project leader of Pharao (a very popular strategy game from Sierra). He also made appearances in (well he wasn't really "in" there but you prolly know what I mean) Lords of Magic, and Lords of the Realm I and II.
Tilted Mill seems to have plans about dedicating themselves to strategy and RPG games.
RPGvault managed to get a hold of Chris Beatrice (above mentioned founder of Tilted Mill), and Jeff Fiske (Co-Designer of Beatrice on Lords of Magic and its Special Edition as well as the former Designer and Producer of Robert E. Lee: Civil War General) and grilled them both on their company's future plans.

Here's a teaser bit:

Jonric: Do you have any specific ideas for CRPG projects at this time? If so, are you willing to give our readers any hints about them?

Jeff Fiske: We are working on a few properties at this time, and while we would love to share these ideas with the world, we realize that this would probably guarantee them never making it to market! I know you have to ask the question and maybe we can get away with this: we are hoping to capture the fun of a MMPRPG without the massive headaches and massive time required to enjoy them, as well as provide a fantastic single player experience. Players will have the requisite number of clear choices about starting positions in the world, and will dive into the action as soon as one does in Diablo.

Whether players want to play online with friends or not works equally well, and we are planning some large-scale group interaction that works both online and in single-player. Obviously, this is simulated for single-player, but the point is if you want to run around and do things by yourself, fine; if you want to hook up with your friends, that works too, and if you want to hook up with your whole neighborhood - "lets get ready to RUUUUMBLEE!!!" All the while, there will be directions and sub-quests that players explore at their personal pace. No more waiting around for your friends or feeling guilty that you have to answer the phone or get the door. There is more we could tell you but nothing is worse than having your idea taken by others before you get on store shelves. Now you probably would have been happier if we had said nothing!

RPGDot Feature: RatHunt Interview

| Game Info | Homepage | Screenshots
We recently managed to sit down with Pawel Kalinowski (thanks once again, Pawel), PR and Marketing manager at Polish developer Mirage Interactive (Mortyr) to talk about the company's upcoming LithTech engined RPG/FPS hybrid RatHunt which could very well become a hit title in this year's RPG line-up as it is one of those rare mixes of first-person shooter gameplay with RPG elements.
The only game that delivered a fun gaming experience in this area so far was Deus Ex. Will RatHunt be even better? How is it going to be different? And why should you as an RPG fan look forward to it?

All the answers and much more -like three new screenshots and three new artworks from the game- are to be found right here. Enjoy!

Icewind Dale II Forum Update

Todays update from the Icewind Dale II forums.

    Josh Sawyer

    Multiclassing monks and paladins
Would you settle for monks and paladins belonging to FRCS orders that allowed for very specific multiclassing options (paladin of Ilmater to cleric and back, monk of Shar to sorcerer and back)? I think that would be the best way to handle it.
What I would suggest would essentially be three types of paladins, three types of monks:

Paladin of Ilmater - Freely multi- to cleric and back.
Paladin of Helm - Freely multi- to fighter and back.
Paladin of Mystra - Freely multi- to wizard and back (yes, in fact, Mystra does have paladins, let's not even bring up the whole "only LG deities may have paladins" argument again)

Broken Ones (Lawful Good Ilmateri monks) - Freely multi- to cleric and back.
Old Order (Lawful Neutral monks) - Freely multi- to rogue and back.
Dark Moon (Lawful Evil monks) - Freely multi- to sorcerer and back.

It's slightly different than what is in the FRCS hardcover, but it's pretty close.

    About Despana
These are the Rilauven Despanas. Ahem.
Actually, House Despana first appeared in a really, really old module (a Greyhawk module, I believe). Anyway, there is no connection between the IWD2 Despanas and the BG2 Despanas (if any).

    Damien Foletto

    What's a fallen bladesinger?
A new monster was spotted, people tried to guess what it is. Here's a list of what it is not:
    - There was a Bladesinger in the Severed Hand in IWD1. He was an Elven Bladesinger called Lethias.
    - A drow bladesinger
    - It's non-existing

Nope - no one's guessed it yet. Just suffice it to say that they are very fast, very deadly, and somewhat hard to see. That's all I'm gonna say.
They're not Drow. They are undead and I believe I mentioned them in my designer diary (#2) - which tells where they can be found... for the first time.

Might & Magic 9 (+ HoMM 4) Travel Report

(PC: Single-Player RPG) | Posted by Rendelius @ 15:43 - Top
| Game Info | Rate this game | Homepage | Screenshots
Our friends at Tothegame had the pleasure to visit New World Computing in California. They brought back a travel report with lots of info about M&M9 and HoMM4. Here's something about Might & Magic 9:
Presenting MM9 was Director Keith Francart, whom has been involved with the series since MM6, and Designer Tim Lang whom started at NWC as a tester in 1996, and progressed to working on level design in MM6. The latest addition to the series, Might and Magic 9 on the other hand, has been in production for about 15 months. They started just after a M&M game for PS2 got canned. Both men are of course very enthusiastic about the new game, and especially regarding the jump from sprites (used in MM6 – 8) to 3D technology. They are trying to make the new one more accessible then standard RPG’s by making it easier to get started on and by changing the game play slightly towards that of FPS games. The game has no videos, but quite a few scenes that will come to pass whenever the player gets to a certain point in the game. The player can stay and watch, just leave or in some cases change the event. Although many of these scenes give clues to quests, almost all information can be found several places and you’ll not be able to walk away from the only place specific info is available. The designers seemed especially fond of a theatrical play you can watch, while playing, that in addition to giving important info also is very amusing.

Be sure to follow our link and read the whole article, it reveals quite a lot of details!

DaOC 1.48c patch notes

(PC: MMORPG) | Posted by Rendelius @ 14:35 - Top
| Game Info | Rate this game | Homepage | Screenshots
The Camelot Herald has the latest info on the patch 1.48c that went online at the Pendragon test server. Here's a bit of some importance:
    NEW BATTLEFIELD ZONES

We have added two new restricted RvR battlefield zones, which brings the total number of Battlefields up to 3. Each is restricted by level. The lowest is for levels 20-24, the second for levels 25-29, and the third is for levels 30-35. The intent of these battlefields is to provide a training ground where lower-level characters can practice and learn RvR tactics without having to worry about higher-level players maurading them. Each Battlefield has been configured to allow each player approximately 100 enemy "kills" before you will no longer be allowed to port there.

    The Battlefields:

    - Caledonia - levels 30 - 35, Realm rank 1, Realm level up to 9

    - Murdaigean - levels 25 - 29, Realm rank 1, Realm level up to 5

    - Thidranki - levels 20 - 24, Realm rank 1, Realm level up to 3

The medallion merchant's speech has been updated to reflect the changes within the Battlegrounds. Should you have questions on the function of the portals or which battleground your level/realm rank can travel to, please seek him out.

Asheron's Call 2 Preview at Gamespot UK

(PC: MMORPG) | Posted by Rendelius @ 14:30 - Top
| Game Info | Rate this game | Homepage | Screenshots
There is a new preview of Asheron's Call 2 on the net today: Gamespot UK´has taken a closer look at this upcoming MMORPG. Here's a bit from that preview:
According to Turbine's Jason Booth, 'What we're trying to do, first off, is simplify the game for new users. Most of these games have you make permanent decisions at the beginning, before you have any idea what impact those decisions will have. So we've decided to strip all of that out and just give the user decisions that he can understand - like how does my character look? The only other thing you have to do is name your character.' From there the idea is that your character develops down the path you choose by your actions - will he become a melee fighting expert and have skills and stats associated with that, or will he become a magic user? It's a system that sounds similar to the freeform development on offer in another Microsoft project, Dungeon Siege.

Grumpy Gamer speaks again

Posted by Rendelius @ 10:45 - Top
Jeff Vogel from Spiderweb Software has written another Grumpy Gamer article over at CGO. He talks about the smaller, new game boxes, Independent Studios and - Serious Sam:
Is it the best action game of the year? No. Is it fresh and creative? Yes. Is it fun? Heck, yeah. Is it ten times better than one would think it could be, given its humble origins? Absolutely.

I have repeatedly and tiresomely written in this space about my desire for a strong indie game scene. Practically every popular medium, such as books, music, movies, comics, or theatre, has an outlet through which independent producers can create something, release it to the public on a small scale, and then (and this is the important part) break through and have their work brought to a broader audience.

Warlords Battlecry 2 Review at IGN

(PC: Single- & Multi-Player RPG) | Posted by Rendelius @ 10:41 - Top
| Game Info | Rate this game | Homepage
IGN has reviewed Warlords Battlecry 2. It gets a rating of 8.5/10, and this conclusion ends the article:
I've been playing too many damn RTSs since I've started working here at IGN. Thankfully, some of these manage to do some new things and keep my interest. Warlords: Battlecry was one of them. The sequel may not have a ton of really noticeable new things when it comes down to the real-time strategy aspect of play, but it definitely had enough to draw me through my jaded curtain and get me playing and interested again. And that's no longer an easy feat for an RTS.

"Editor's Choice" - that's the verdict for Disciples 2 - Dark Prophecy in a review at Gaming Excellence. Awarded with 5 out of 5 stars, the game leads them to this positive conclusion:
Although the gameplay is nearly identical to the first, the visuals are the largest enhancement. For anyone who enjoyed the first rendition, Disciples II: Dark Prophecy is a must have, as the updated visuals and general improvements make this a well-rounded and addictive strategy title.

Hands on Morrowind Preview at ActionTrip

(PC: Single-Player RPG) | Posted by Rendelius @ 10:33 - Top
| Game Info | Rate this game | Homepage | Screenshots
ActionTrip has a preview of Morrowind, and it's a hands-on experience - lucky guys. In general, they are more than pleased with what they saw:
Honestly, RPG games have never really been my cup of tea. I get bored quickly with them, since the format is ultimately the same - Fight from point A to point B, hang around and level, buy stuff, go to point C, rinse and repeat until Bad Guy is killed, The End. Ultimately, there's no meat there to really sink one's teeth into to make it truly an immersive experience. Morrowind is one of those revolutionary games that has re-lit the RPG spark back into my cheeks. And considering this is only the beta, I cannot WAIT for the final product. If you're even remotely an RPG fan, you owe it to yourself to get this one as soon as it hits the shelves.

Dungeon Siege Preview at Khabal

(PC: Single- & Multi-Player RPG) | Posted by Rendelius @ 03:17 - Top
Comments (2) | Game Info | Rate this game | Homepage | Screenshots
Khabal Gaming informed us that they have written a preview of Dungeon Siege, Gas Powered Games' upcoing dungeon crawl that is bound to be a bestseller for sure. Here's a bit that talks about some downsides of the version they were testing:
Although Dungeon Siege might appeal to Diablo fans and newbies to the genre, I would have liked to have a more complex and developed storyline as well as some simple dialogue options, as there isn't much in the way of interactionwhen you speak to non-player characters you meet along the way. Also, the game system could have more skills than the present 4 skill groups. Perhaps specializing in a particular skill or upgrading a particular skill might allow you access to special powers and abilities.

As this version of Dungeon Siege that I am playing is only a preview copy of the game, perhaps not all of the game's features have been implemented. It would be interesting to see what additional stuff the developers are going to put into the final version. As it would be a waste if the game's fine graphics end up with shallow gameplay.

Game Review Online has posted an interview with Greg Zeschuk about Bioware and the games they do. This snippet deals with Neverwinter Nights:
Which of the many features in NWN is Bioware most proud of, and will this have an impact upon future Bioware titles?

[Greg] That’s a really tough question, but my best shot at an answer is the module creation tools - I strongly believe they’re going to change the world of development forever. As far as impact on our future titles I think the tools will also have a large impact because of the creative things we’re going to see from the fans. After we see what some of the ingenious things the fans are doing we’re going to get a better idea what the tools can do, and what we can do in the future.

Elder Scrolls Preview at Gamepen

(PC: Single-Player RPG) | Posted by Rendelius @ 00:12 - Top
| Game Info | Rate this game | Homepage | Screenshots
A preview of Moorowind has been published at GamePen yesterday. Here's how the game starts:
The game cleverly mixes in the tutorial and character creation into the opening of the game. After the backstory fills you in how you got to be on a ship headed for Morrowind, a region located in northwest Tamriel, you are woken up by an NPC, who asks your name, which you enter.

A guard comes and brusquely tells you to follow him, at which the game tells you how to move and use objects. In a very clever way, the space bar and right mouse button are almost your entire interface. When you press a space bar, it uses whatever is in front of you, like a door, examines objects (which you can try to pick up as well), or initiates conversations with NPCs. The right mouse button opens your character screen, which allows you to use objects, equip stuff, check the map, and so forth. The interface is both invisible and efficient.

When you debark the ship, you are taken to a guard who asks you where you are from. That is where you choose your character race and appearance. You then are taken to the registrar, who asks you about your background. It is here where the meat of your character is created. Anyone who has played Daggerfall will feel instantly at home. You can either directly select a class, answer a series of questions a la Daggerfall or Ultima to suggest a class, or create a custom class. Like Daggerfall, custom class creation is a marvel. You can choose from tons of abilities and skills, to tweak your custon class to perfection. Holding the cursor over any skill, option or attribute brings a pop-up window to describe what it does, to make decisions easier.
