13889 newsbits later...

Rendelius, 2001-07-01

Welcome to the revamped RPGDot site. I think you'll agree that we have come a long way from our beginnings in summer 99. What you are looking at is a custom made, database driven site by gamers for gamers. We started out as fans, and we still are. But like in an RPG, you gain levels over time, find more powerful blades and spells. The new RPGDot is where we are at, but we promise to level up again soon - with even more features, more functionality and more bells and whistles.

When I founded blinkingdot.com (the former name of our site) in summer 1999, I actually just wanted to give it a try. For many months, this was a one-man show. But today, a dozen of fabulous guys (and a fabulous girl) are working to bring you the best RPG news coverage. We have posted nearly 14.000 newsbits since we started, have published hundreds of articles, worked tens of thousands of hours on the site, moved servers four times, paid the equivalent of a middle class car in bills, earned the equivalent of a used tyre from advertising - and all in all, consider us to be a bunch of happy monkeys.

There are two major changes with RPGDot from today on: we made a layout that can be viewed in about every browser out there, and we have built a database that will make your experience richer and more rewarding. The news script and the picture viewer are home made as well, thanks to our very talented workaholics in the team, and so are our great search features.

Now let me introduce you to the main new features of our site. While there is a lot of functionality added under the hood (allowing us to spend more time on research and less on site maintenance), it can be seen on the surface, too.

Our site consists of a lot of related databases. The main ones are those for newsbits, articles, screenshots and game information. We tried to combine them in a way that will help you finding the info you need.

Our newsbits now come with a link to comments and one for an overview of the game in question. The comments are there for you to add your thoughts or additional information to a newsbit. The link to the game's overview will lead to a page where you can find some general information about the game, the game's logo or cover art, the game's homepage, the developer and the publisher, the (expected) release date and a list of the 10 latest newsbits concerning the game. This will make it easy for you to find the latest information, even when it has slipped from our front page. Currently, we have 2000 newsbits in the database, and each and every newsbit added to our news page will be visible here, too. In addition, you'll find the link to all articles on RPGDot about that game, and to its screenshots on our site. Furthermore, you can order or preorder a lot of those games from this page, at very interesting prices.

We have added information about 500+ CRPGs past, present and future right now. Not all of our categorization is already visible; we will release it later on, when the site has proven to be stable and reliable.

The second main improvement is our "games" page. Not only will you find all the games in our database listed there, but also you will be able to do sophisticated searches. Just some examples: Want to see a list of all RPG related patches we reported about? No problem. Need to find all movies and trailers released for Neverwinter Nights? They are just one mouseclick away. Want to know what we reported about the industry in general? Search and find. Want to find all MMORPGs we have in our database? Just do it.

The search on the main page is there to help you retrieve info about everything that can't be found with our relational database. Search for persons, keywords, just everything you want to know.

Another novelty is our list of release dates. Now you can see which games will be out next.

All databases are constantly updated, and we hope we have turned our site in the best resource for RPG information on the Internet. As I said, we are all volunteers, fans, so competing with those large commercial sites may seem a little bit preposterous, but what we lack in money, we compensate with enthusiasm and dedication.

I want to express my gratitude to all of those from RPGDot who have put a lot of time and effort into the new site. Money can't buy what you have done. I also want to express my gratitude to our readers. Your regular visits were the motivation for everything we did. I had a look at the logfiles recently. The number of visitors we had in our first two months equals our daily visitor numbers nowadays. This tells me that we must have done something right :-).

If you know us, you know that we are looking ahead every second. A lot of features aren't visible yet (because they aren't tested very well); others await installation (like the automated notification service). However, we hope you are happy with what we offer now, and we would like to invite you to write us about the new site, your likes and dislikes. Mail it to me; I will forward every mail to the whole team. They care.

Lets journey onward together!
