Vanguard E3 Preview
Rhianna Pratchett, 2004-06-03

Publisher: Microsoft Developer: Sigil Games Online Website: www.vanguardsoh.com ETA: TBC

When it comes to MMORPGs we've got a lot to look forward to. Whether you're a hardcore player waiting for the second time-vampire hit of EverQuest, or a newbie hoping to be lured in by the colourful, easygoing World of Warcraft, there is something for everyone. There's no doubt about it: lives, relationships and personal hygiene will be lost.

Somewhat further off release than the aforementioned games, but no less important, is Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. This is one to definitely keep an eye on because it comes from the fellows behind the original EverQuest including Brad McQuiad, and when it comes to creating epic adventures online, these guys really know what they're doing.

Vanguard is what art director Keith Parkinson describes as a "Truly third generation title" and currently they have been filling the game with everything players would expect in a first-generation role-playing adventure and now they are adding in all the bits that will make the game a unique experience and hopefully move the whole online genre forward.

Unfortunately there's actually not that much concrete information about the game yet and most questions elicit "we can't say yet but it's going to be great" answers. What's in place of the world does look fantastic, with beautiful buildings built to scale from majestic elven cities to claustrophobic cities and Cornish-style castles. These are the kind of landscapes that make you feel like you're really there, rather than just shuffling around a static theme park.

With the backstory to the game now starting to appear on the Vanguard website the game is starting to generate a bit of a buzz and you can bet with Microsoft's backing that buzz will soon be a roar.
