RPG Vault has posted the latest Captain's Log for the upcoming Pirates of the Burning Sea. Continuing on details about character customization, this Log looks at "Surfacing" (also known as skinning in some circles). The article also contains several new videos demonstrating some of the techniques being discussed.
It's extremely important to note that the modeling, texturing, shading and lighting of an object are all parts of a single process. This is where most game art fails because the three processes are sometimes split into three different people who each have their own look and feel agendas. I've seen character modelers intentionally leave hard normals in awkward places, simply because she/he liked the chiseled look it created. Then combining that with a texture artist who felt that textures should be as detailed and photographic as possible filled with hi-frequency detail and a Technical Director who felt the lighting should be all glowy and dreamy. Augh! This industry is in desperate need for art direction! Bruce Sharp will teach them all a lesson. :)
