Inquisitor Preview

2003-02-18, compiled by Wooden Dragon (developer of Inquisitor)

Inquisitor is an Action RPG (Role-Playing Game) that brings the player to a dark medieval fantasy world full of heretic conspiracies, inquisitional processes, deadly intrigues and abhorrent crimes. The player is going to pick up a role of a medieval investigator, who is plunged into a malignant struggle for power in the ancient kingdom of Ultherst. However, the player will soon realise that there is much more at stake than the destiny of the kingdom. And it is now only up to the player which fate the kingdom will meet and who will win the malicious struggle for power - whether the devilish heretics or the defendants of the crown.

Scenario

In three consecutive years the ancient kingdom of Ultherst had suffered from series of devastating disasters that were very similar to divine punishments, disasters described in ancient liturgical writings. According to these holy texts the divine punishments shall be a foreshadower of the end of days, when the Prince of Darkness shall be let out of his millennial earthbound prison and shall ruin the world with infinite chaos. Due to these events the Realm was caught in absolute chaos. Heretic sects spread rapidly in the Realm and self-appointed prophets and preachers started to foretell an arrival of fallen angels and their hellish armies. The Church, that had always been an unwavering support for all people, suddenly found itself in a deep crisis, while it was unable to stop the heretics and their poisonous thoughts.
In order to defeat the evil the Holy Inquisition was established by the Church. It was an investigative and judicial apparatus with one and only mission - track down the heretics. Soon after that many funeral piles with the sentenced heretics were lighted up around the Realm. But the heresy had already managed to take a deep root in the highest society - among the noblemen, in the Church and even in the Holy Inquisition itself. In this absolute decadence a frightful struggle for power broke out between an ancient heretic sect Children of New Order and a small but powerful group of royalists. And in this situation the Player is going to step into this fight. At the very beginning of the game the Player is mandated by an unknown benefactor to lead an investigation of horrific crimes that were committed in a small border town. Due to that the player will soon get wind of a monstrous conspiracy, leading to the most powerful persons in the Realm.

Gameplay

  • Inquisitor is 2D-isometric RPG in real time similar to Diablo II and Baldur's Gate II: Shadow of Amn.
  • In the Game the player participates as a priest, paladin or rogue. For each character there is a new original plot and different story situated in a common gaming world. It means that the Player can experience three different stories with unique action, which triples the total gaming time. It allows the player to enter the world of Inquisitor for three times and always with new expectation. This original concept is allowed by complexity and variability of the script, that has been inspired by both the classic literature and several authentic inquisitional processes held in the medieval Europe in 14th and 15th century.
  • The Story is one of the two strongest points of the Game. Most of the main quests and sub-quests consists of crime investigation, which includes wide range of activities - looking for clues, gathering evidence, interrogating witnesses… and also torturing, while torture goes hand in hand with inquisitional processes. The Player will have the power to arrest suspects of heresy and interrogate them in a torture chamber using various instruments of torture (the rack, iron maiden, chair of pain, head crusher etc.). On the other hand, the Player should be very careful about torturing people, while there is a possibility that the person being tortured is absolutely innocent. Torturing innocent persons will definitely damage the player's reputation and all his relationships with other NPC's.
  • The main plot consists of numerous primary quests that can be basically solved in any order the player chooses. This means that there is a fully non-linear story in the game with dozens and dozens of promoting and secondary quests. All in all, there are more than 75 quests and sub-quests in the game.
  • Apart from the scenario there is another strong point of Inquisitor - a combat action. There are over 80 types of deadly enemies and monsters, from wicked heretics to devilish demons and fallen archangels. With 15 original skills of each character and with their mutual combination, every single player can find a completely new combat strategy, which would be most convenient. However, the A.I. of the monsters and NPC's is very advanced and the player has to use a different combat strategy against every new type of monster.
  • Another important element of the game, which makes up the final gameplay, is magic items. Gigantic amount of magic items can highly increase the abilities and skills of the player's character. Collecting magic items and their combining is now another aspect that makes the player come back to the world of Inquisitor again and again.

    Summary

In total Inquisitor offers 120-150 hours of entertainment in three different and totally non-linear stories, situated in a dark medieval fantasy world of brutal crimes and inquisitorial processes. And what's more - with a multiplayer game the players can team up and experience another dimension of playing in another original campaign. Thanks to a great variability of Skills of each player's character the player can solve any gaming situation in many different ways. It depends only on the player which way the character is going to develop. The player's actions directly influence the progress of the plot. Because of this the player is directly responsible for many consequences that happen during the game. Combat with numerous enemies and monsters alternates with logical thinking essential for solving many quests and sub-quests.
