The Online Gamer Diary

Myrthos, 2001-07-03

The Online Gamer Diary tells the tale of the online gamer and the online games he encounters on his travels. RPGDot wishes you lots of fun with this diary. Feel free to comment, ask questions or suggest new topics on this diary via RPGFool or mail us.

At the moment I'm writing this phase 1 of the Fighting Legends Beta has come to an end and phase 2 is just beginning. I ended part 1 of this beta report saying that I just reached level 10 and that now some RTS elements would come into action. So here it goes.

Fighting Legends Beta Report, part 2

About resources and huts
The amount of resources you can gather is limited to the level you are on, so until you reach level 10 you have no way of getting enough resources to construct anything. The character you play with (the avatar, in my case Myrthos the Lich) has a base and one hut. There are five different types of huts; melee, speed, techniq, missile an mpow. As the avatar of your choice only excels in one of them, that's also the hut you will have when you start out. Your base will automatically gather resources when your are off fighting monsters so there is no special effort you need to do in order to harvest them. Besides that you will find some resources on your way that you can collect also.
In the first 9 levels the only thing resources are good for is to be able to get resurrected once you die.

Once I've reached level 10 I was able to gather enough resources to construct another hut. There can be only one hut of each type so I ended up with the maximum of 5 huts. Cool isn't it? Not that you can do a lot with them, as long as there are no characters in need of the huts they are not really needed. But it does look more impressive having 5 huts in your base then having only 1.

There is me and my buddy the Zombie

I've made a friend
There is one more thing you can do at level 10 and that is creating another character. It's only possible to create one for every ten levels, so at level 160 there is the maximum of 16 characters in your tribe. But that takes a while for me to get there, so let's stick to this one for the moment.

As Myrthos is a Lich and as anyone knows a Lich is of the magic kind :), I wanted a different type of character. I don't know why, but I decided for a Zombie who is good in swinging his bone club at the bugs, or in other words he is an inhabitant of the melee hut.

So, there he was my level 1 Zombie. A real tough guy he was with the name Doofy.... Ok, ok, I know that's not a cool name for a sturdy guy as my zombie, but at that moment in the beta phase there was no way to change the name. Ah, who cares let's harvest some bodies..

Now how does this work
Hmmm.. that is not as easy as it sounds. Even though the controls seem simple enough I've had some trouble in getting things right. In contrast to other online games, in Fighting Legends you control more than one character of course. There is actually a very simple interface made up for it in which I could decide the relative positions between my characters. The zombie at the front and the Lich in the back was my way of going at it. I also don't have to left click to make them attack, as soon as they are in range they start to fight. No, the problem was something else. My lich was a level 10 dude and was able to hit from a great distance. My zombie was at level 1 and as a melee fighter needed to be real close to the opponent. The lich was too strong for the zombie to do anything. The moment he got into range he waved his staff and the bug got killed, without the zombie even getting close to do any harm. There was no way I could get them to work properly as a team. And I believe it's due to the very different nature of the two characters. I would have been better served with a missile type character who could throw spears from a distance in my opinion. But headstrong as Myrthos the lich is, he kept his zombie.

Zombies die too you know
After a while I decided to level up Doofy a bit, left the lich at the base and started to beat the hell out of the bugs. This worked very well, but it took a lot of beating as he needed to get close to the bugs. Luckily it is possible for an avatar to make two of his tribe members immortal also and as there was only one other member in the tribe Doofy was lucky.
Yes, dear Doofy got killed in battle, but he wandered home to his hut and was resurrected in no time. Isn't life sweet :).

Meet the spear throwing dude

Let's get something bigger
As there were two of us now, I imagined it would be possible to tackle some of the stronger opponents. One of them being a spear throwing dude. In this case the combination of Doofy at the front and Myrthos in the back worked perfectly. We ran to the spear throwing maniac and Doofy started to take some beating. I stopped when Doofy was right next to him and then attacked. Both Myrthos and Doofy were in a fighting range, with Myrthos doing his stuff at a distance. Yeah!! another one bites the dust! and so we were the proud winners of this small battle.

I experimented with this scheme a bit trying to get it better and better and got the two of us killed every now and then. Unfortunately when I got good at it some other duties called and I had to devote some attention to that (like taking part in the redesign of RPGDot).

Hey! Where are you guys
In between the other thing I managed to play a bit one, this was actually one day after the beta 1 ended. I was curious what would happen and it seemed to work just fine, after downloading a new patch. But the only thing was, my characters were gone. Yep, they wiped them out. Which of course gave me the opportunity to create a new character from a different clan. This time I choose an Incineration Gunner from the Pyron clan, yes indeed one of the fire dudes. The Incineration gunner is labeled as a missile guy and missiles it throws. He is carrying a heavy gun from which several balls, looking like some yin & yang symbols, are launched. This guy kicks ass!!

So the next beta report will be with Myrthos the Incineration Gunner. And a next report there will be. Fighting Legends is a refreshing game to play and is a relatively stable game too. Especially for a level 1 beta, kudos for the developers of Maximum Charisma Studios.
