Game of the Year 2004 Awards: Most Anticipated
Myrthos, 2005-02-23

The last couple of weeks you could vote for the best RPGs and MMORPGs that have been released in 2004. Not us but you the player decide who receives the RPGDot 2004 Awards in the various categories. We thank all those who entered their votes and helped us in making it possible to select the best games of 2004.

Most Anticipated

Several games are scheduled to be released in 2005. This lists the games you are looking forward to most.

The winner: Elder Scrolls 4 - Oblivion
There are those who eschew the wonders of the Elder Scrolls world for the more staid adventures of your typical isometric RPG, KOTOR , or even Final Fantasy and its ilk - these people are fools. Though the main quest of Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind was quite linear, the rest of the game fairly defines freedom, and reading any of Bethesda 's interviews on Oblivion makes clear that they're more dedicated than ever to creating a compelling, interactive, and realistic world for RPGers of all stripes to lose themselves in. And as if we needed any more prompting, the screenshots are breathtaking. It's a fool's bet that this game is coming out in 2005, but I'll go ahead and say it: If you're not looking forward to Oblivion , you don't love computer role-playing games.

Runner Up: Gothic 3
With most old RPG series down or on hold (Ultima, Wizardry, Might & Magic), a new generation of RPGs is destined to be classics. The Gothic series is surely one of these new great brands. Gothic 1 was good, a real surprise made by the unknown developers Piranha Bytes. Gothic 2 and its expansion were big (but I have to admit, lost some of the mood that made part one so exceptional). Now, in late 2005, the story of the orcs and humans and gods and mages will continue. Piranha Bytes is putting a lot of focus on the controls and combat, but will also keep the lively and seamless gaming world along with a great storyline. Sounds all very promising, promising enough to lift Gothic 3 into the top 3 of the most anticipated games of 2005!

Second Runner Up: Knights of the Old Rebublic 2
With Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic winning such accolades as GOTY, Platinum Hit, etc. (in addition to the many positive game reviews from all over) - was it any surprise that Star Wars KotOR 2: The Sith Lords would become very prominent in our list of Most Anticipated Games? Even though KotOR 2 is not a BioWare product, the fact that BioWare assisted game developer Obsidian greatly in helping develop KotOR 2 fueled a lot of anticipation, excitement, and desire in fans of the original for this sequel. Only time will tell, as our own GOTY 2005 results will indicate how well Obsidian managed to fit into BioWare's oversized KotOR boots with their KotOR 2.
