I bought this game a few days after it came out. It was remarkable good and had the essential elements of a good rpg. Better graphics then gothic with gameplay superior to that of Deus ex. With a story line which you can live to be your dreams of a light bringer or become a powerful dark jedi. I would most definately say that this is the best came currently out and would most definately give it a 10 out of 10. |

GREAT GAME!!! Very close to a perfect 10. There are a few annoying things that prevent it from the reaching the top of the heap. Loading, recycled faces, no zoom option, some small glitches, and you can walk through dead creatures/enemies... yeah, I know that they're petty reasons. But hey, they are legitimate! |

I had to rate this as the best Star Wars game on the market to date. From the awesome force powers to the graphics and the out standing plot. This game is nothing shot of an interactive CG movie. And the plot twists are just out of this world. What more can we ask for in a Star Wars game than to be able to choose weather you want to be a Jedi or a Sith. The game is just amazing. |

well to be honest i'd give it an 8.5 but seeing as how i can't i thought i'd be nice and give a 9. apart from the things mentioned by mud i found the jedi npcs unbalanced (would have been an all jedi party if i didn't use mission occassionally for skills) and the irrelevance of skills disappointing. a highly enjoyable game nonetheless |

I rented this game and absolutely couldn't part with it to return it so I had to buy it (which I had done that right way and saved those late fees!). I am a casual gamer and have gotten right to the end of this which is very unusual. I love xbox and am so glad a greater variety of games are becoming available. This one is incredible! Great story, graphics and just the right difficulty (I hate games that seem to be out to frustrate and not engage). The only problem is what to do now and how will anything else compare?

With so many inferior RPGs these days or the unfortunate tendency of game makers to concentrate on MMORPGs or Diablo clones, sometimes it's nice to find a good ol' fashioned RPG that makes you remember why you fell in love with the genre. SW: KotOR is one of those games. I was shocked at how fantastic this game was. The story is top notch, one of the best stories I've EVER played in a PC game, and I've been gaming since the early 80's. The D&D rules surprisingly fit in nicely with the Star Wars universe and the game even follows the same mechanics that made Bioware's previous classic RPG, Baldur's Gate, so great yet they do it with a new engine. It combines turn-based RPG strategy (i.e. Arcanum & Pool of Radiance 1) with a smooth movie/action atmosphere in a way I've never seen in a PC game. Bioware brings back the fun mini-quests and henchmen interaction that made you feel like you were in a movie in BG2 and I think the story in this game may be better than the Star Wars Prequel stories. ;-) Truly a unique game, only avoid this game if you hate the George Lucas' Star Wars creation because otherwise you're missing out on one of the best RPGs in recent years. |

This game got everything right, in every aspect : technical (graphics, sound, stability) and gameplay (interface, char dev, storyline). What I especially like is that although the game is quite open ended, you never stray too far from the main plot (happens alot in games like Morrowind).
Not to mention, this is the first PC game released in the last couple of years that doesnt seem to require an urgent patch to fix major issues.

High production quality.
Too many on-the-rails events to jar me out of immersion ... overeasy combat (except for the final battle, and only because my character totally wasnt designed for it). Party interaction was entirely bland (no BG2 in that respect by a long shot) and the romance part was just plain stupid. As were all the minigames.
If not for the vote busting 1s this would rank top ... I dont think that would be justified anymore than the high ranking of Morrowind. |

The best single player game out there with Deus Ex 1. The people that have rated this low have failed to give anything but childish views so you can safely ignore them. Only reason no to get this game is if you really hate Star Wars, really hate RPGs (personally I don't like most of them) or really hate long games as thins one is between 40 - 70 hours to enjoy properly. |

KotOR is a great game, make no mistake about that. It has a fantastic story, superb presentational values, wonderful voice actors and a setting that appeals to most of the nerds among us. What most reviews fail to mention, though, is that it also has very small maps, very easy quests, extremely linear worlds (although you can explore the worlds as you see fit) and the game is extremely easy to finish. The battles look amazing, but most of the time they start, you watch them, and it's over. There's almost no tactics involved and even the final boss was easy to defeat even though I wasn't really "trying". It's all too automatic and streamlined. Anyhow, a great game while it lasted. |

This is a great game, one of the most enthralling I played in a long time. It excels mostly through the engaging story it tells, which is very much what you would expect from star ward, and yet manages to surprise and keeps up suspense throughout the game. Also on the positive side: nicely fleshed out characters, dialogue choices really matter, a lot of ethical decisions throughout the game bring the concept of light/dark side to life. Excellent voice acting. Beautiful visuals and a fighting system that keeps a successful balance between a nice presentation, real time viuals and (a few) tactical elements - a system that really allows you to enjoy the action but also to do micro management when necessary. Great variety of locations. Force powers look and play great.
Negative things: Having played Morrowind and Gothic before this one I couldnt help but feel the limited size of the worlds, and the invisible walls that abound in the outdoors levels were a dissapouintment. Also a lot of faces are reused, adding a lot of deja vu. There is also some voice glitches (this is the german version) including missing dialogue, humans sppeaking Twilek, and a movie in french. Sometimes fighting AI isnt great - One important encounter with a gan of bounty hunters I could have bypassed just by fleeing - the gang wasn't following me!
So I was tempted to give only 9 points - but considering how much fun I had and how it captured my imagination I give it a 10. |

As others have mentioned - the maps are very linear. Jedi classes are unbalanced as they excel vs other classes which makes combat easy. Also there's little variation in tactics required in different combat situations. Skills get less important as the game progresses (only worthwhile ones are persuasion and computer skills). For me, the game crashed on an average of once every three hours.
On the plus - Excellent graphics (each planet has its own unique look), numerous and interesting quests, many of which offer a light side and dark side solution. Good storyline. Good character interaction - characters feel like they have their own personalities. Most characters have interesting background stories which they reveal as the game progresses (I particularly liked the AK Droid stories!). Another nice touch is that characters that you aren't using level up with the main party. Two of the three mini-games are entertaining. Game lasts for about 30 hours.
Overall the positives far outweigh the negatives. Thoroughly enjoyable throughout. A must buy! |

Brilliantly designed interface. Truly great characters. A nefarious villain. Stellar plot. My two problems? The individual world exploration range is actually somewhat limited (although detailed) and the whole experience, for me, lasted about 30 hours. This game is sweet, but just too short in comparison to the time I logged in for Wizardry 8, Ultima 7, Elder Scrolls 3, etc. Still, this is a class act, all the way. More please. |

I like this game very much I've just finished the 2nd time but I don't feel the real pleasure in it. The graphics is really amazing and the main story is good too. However, compared to NWN I have some problems with it. It's a very good thing that the combat mode have been designed in a very dinamic mode but they removed the feats and magical powers that really make an RPG an RPG. And there aren't any other solutions for quests than only one. The combats are also a little easy. |

Linear world, boring combats, always the same Charakters once again and once again, the scenery keeps repeating the whole game is stretched so fucking stretched, I enjoyed walking around the Town in Gothic2 10 times more than playing a whole chapter in Kotor. |

If i had rated the article a while ago, when I finished the game I would have given it a 11/10. But when I look back now I realize how many imperfections this game has. Its a good game, dont get me wrong, its just that its not great. The main problem is its linearity. Oh man, it feels like walking on a rail. Sure there are many worlds and u can explore them in any way u want but the maps are so small. The quests are very easy nothing like in BG2 or PS:T. The story is nice but its SOOOOOOO clichee. For example Bastila is just another counterpart for Aribeth. From the middle of the game it becomes all too obvious that she will fall to the dark side and that you are going to save her. Also there are numerous balancing problems. There is no point in choosin a scoundrel at first when u can very well get a soldier(this one has rapid access to feats which r far more important than skills). I was pretty angry that I chose range weapons feats at first when u just dont need them anymore when you're jedi. Another crappy feature is the inventory: by the end of the game you've accumulated so many itmes u cant find anyting in your backpack (i think this has someting to do with the fact that the game first appeared on XBOX... how i hate consoles!)I cant hink of any more cons now so I'll get to the good parts. The graphics are nice although they didnt lokk that way on my computer (I have MX440 :( ). The voices are excelent (the actors are really pros). The interaction between party members is also a plus. The music is nothing spectacular (ye old Starwars crap) but its not annoying either. A word of advice: if u want to play the game properly play it with Dark Side(the ending is super). I realized one "odd" thing, and many others I'm sure, this game is actually Neverwinter Nights placed in Starwars universe. It has the same feeling. Play it and u'll know what I'm talking about.
In conclision the game desereves an 7.5 but because I'm a STARWARS fan I'll give it a 9. Hopefully BIOWARE will not make the same mistakes again with KOTOR2. |

First things first.

This is the first Starwars game I've played, and being from Bioware, I was reluctant to get this after with what I felt was the disasterous Neverwinter Nights. So put it off for a while. The core of the story and some gameplay elements IMO seems to be a basic rip from PS:T, or at least it highly reminds me of that game, just not half as involving or detailed (It may seem like I'm slamming this game, but note my rating). All of the core elements are there. While you don't wake up with amniesia, there are a lot of hints throughout the game that clues you in that you are not what you seem, later discovering that you were the biggest arse of the universe who endured a mind wipe before your journey began (as good as death- Hello TNO!) . The story turning to self discover to redemption. The way character interaction is handled in the same way, which gives you access to initiate the dialog- asking questions and learning more about the NPC (with a lot less dialog options, of course). not really fair to compare this, as I'm sure someone out there can tell me that character interatcion is handled in this manner in a lot of games, but I just can't help seeing PS:T's signiture all throughout this game. I'm sure it could just be my imagination (or wishful thinking), but I don't know... If so, I'm glad Bioware is moving forward and not backwards like I feared when they released NWN.
When I think about it, I can compare gameplay with other games as well, such as having to participate in a race to advance the story. I remember Giants: Citizen Kubuto well. but all this just as variety and helps keep the game interesting.
In conclusion, it felt like a similar story with a different set of twists. The main drive to play this game was in the environment. The graphics were a delight, the atmosphere beautiful. The music is well done (loved the Dantoine theme). Last but not least, beating ass with a double light saber couldn't have been more fun. While there is nothing new or innovating about this game, it is still a good game. I just wished it to be a little longer, and a lot less linear and predictable. I'll recommend this based on fun and variety. |

Did you notice how it has exactly the same storyline as Neverwinter Nights? I won't go into details not to spoil it but it really annoyed me. And the characters too, think of Bastila and Aribeth...
Just like NWN, It's a bit too black and white as far as role-playing goes. If I compared it to an AD&D game you'd have to be either lawful good or chaotic evil, there's no room for any subtlety. Not for my usual chaotic good style anyway.
Otherwise a good game with a nice twist in the plot. |

Just terrible. Naive, stupid, simple storyline - good for children only. Plain characters, no real thing. It's ok if you say it is a game aimed for 8-14 y/o kids, I guess they like it, hence score. Did I mention dumb storyline? Just compare this to PS:Torment. And all those enemies firing advanced sci-fi weapons that just can't hit you and do sh..t when they do. Couldn't play it anymore, forget it! |

Probably the best turn-based RPG in existence. And by turn-based, I mean strictly turn-based -- a game capable of pausing and putting all your future actions in a que -- not Baldur's Gate that is technically turn-based but doesn't have gameplay to reflect it nor Final Fantasy VII which is more of a real-time engine. The only prerequisite for the game known as KOTOR (Knight of the Old Republic) is an enjoyment of the Star Wars universe. Honestly, I think you could still enjoy this game if you know nothing about Star Wars, but you certainly need an imagination. The ending is one of the best endings in RPG history. If you don't catch the subtle hints sprinkled throughout the game, you WILL be shocked when the truth is revealed near the end! It's also the best RPG in existence to use a good vs. evil concept, probably because the light side and dark side are second nature to the Star Wars universe. My only complaint is that this game is too easy. If you catch on to the gameplay quickly, you'll soon learn that some Jedi powers are unstoppable and a second playthrough, while fun, is too darn easy because you now know how the game works. |

KOTOR is just a mod for NWN placed in the SW universe. The sequel is a bit better, though. |

I first have to tell that I am not a fan of Star Wars movies granted i watched and liked them but not loose my minf for them or think myself as jedi until i played KOTOR.What makes this game diffrent is the freedom like u have in The Elder Scrolls series. You don't have to "be" the protecor of the innocent in order to win the game you can be a sih lord if you want and that alone makes it worth your while to play. If only you are a fan of RPG you should try it becaouse of that. |
