Dungeon: Gladiator Interview

by Garrett, 2002-08-13

Following our Gallery, we had the chance to talk to Noah Decter-Jackson, project leader of Dungeon: Gladiator, a new Dungeon RPG. Whether it will be something like Ultima Underworld (or Arx Fatalis) or maore an action title like Blade of Darkness, this interview will try to reveal....

RPGDot: Hello Noah, please introduce Complex Games to us; what other projects did you work on in the past?

Noah Decter-Jackson: My name is Noah Decter-Jackson, and I am the President and Project Lead of Complex Games. Complex and Dungeon is my first 'official' project.

RPGDot: Let's talk about Dungeon now. A first person game in a fantasy world will remind many of Ultima Underworld or the new released Arx Fatalis. Is the game like those or does it differ reg gameplay? Is it taking place in a dungeon then, or will there be a upper world also?

Noah Decter-Jackson: We share some of the same roots with games like Underworld and it's spiritual successor Arx, however we're trying to steer away from the exclusive hack&slash approach to gameplay available for most 'Dungeon-crawls'. A better gameplay comparison might be made with Deus Ex where several approaches can be made to resolving the various challenges and conflicts throughout the game. There are several overworld and underworld environments plotted for the game so that players won't have to spend most of their time trekking through dank musty caverns.

RPGDot: What is the gameplay like? Will there be multiple choice dialogues, puzzles, shops, healers...? Is there a RPG System? If so, is there a charcter generation? Are there different classes and races; and how about skills and attributes?

Noah Decter-Jackson: Gameplay is diverse... We're developing a dynamic hand to hand combat system that we feel will keep combat interesting and exciting throughout the entire game, however players who prefer to avoid conflict through stealth or clever thinking will have this option as well in most cases. Interacting with the environment and inhabitants of the Dungeon will also be very important for advancing through the game. There is an RPG system, and character development will be a part of both the single and multiplayer sides of the game. The player will be able to choose their race, skills, and attributes.

RPGDot: How do the single- and multiplayer parts of Dungeon differ?

Noah Decter-Jackson: Substantially. Multiplayer focuses very strongly on our hand to hand combat gameplay system, in a sort of gladiatorial arena environment. Singleplayer focuses on all aspects of gameplay we intend to offer, following a dynamic storyline through a terrifying environment.

RPGDot: Is the game more story-, more puzzle- or more action orientated or a mixture of the above?

Noah Decter-Jackson: Definately a mixture of all elements.

RPGDot: How is combat like? You announced a 'Player-choice based character development'; how does that affect combat or vice versa? Is there also ranged combat?

Noah Decter-Jackson:The player choses to what degree they engage in combat or find other ways to resolve problems. The Combat system itself is based on action and reaction in swordplay. Attacking without some measure of thought or tactics will quickly wear out the player and leave them open to counter-attacks. There will likely be a ranged component to gameplay, but it will not be particularly dominant.

RPGDot: And magic: Is it based or runes, mana, scrolls or reagents? How does it work? How man spells will there be?

Noah Decter-Jackson: The Magic system is based on symbolic 'Sigils'. It will largely provide player's with personal enhancements and some environmental manipulation.

RPGDot: Can we play a superhero, who can do both great combat and great wizardry or do we have to specialize?

Noah Decter-Jackson: You specialize based on the actions you take. If you fight a great deal and use magic a great deal it would be possible for a player to become accomplished at both.

RPGDot: What other goodies will the game offer, e.g automap, journal...?

Noah Decter-Jackson: We're not quite in a position yet in development to offer our specific goodie details.

RPGDot: What else can you tell us about Dungeon? What makes it a great game?

Noah Decter-Jackson: It may kills germs that cause bad breath, plaque, and gingivitis* *(but we make no promises)

RPGDot: At what stage of development is the game currently in?

Noah Decter-Jackson: We are currently finishing up our initial technical demo, which we will use to attempt to secure a publishing contract

RPGDot: Thanks for the answers :)

Noah Decter-Jackson: No problem, thank you!
